In response to the opening post of this thread, I would comment that this is the product of the foolish decision of our parents and grandparents to buy into socialism. They allow FDR to turn our free republic upside down and create a nation of dependents. The nanny state now takes so much of our wealth that we may no longer provide for our own future well-being and are increasingly dependent upon its benevolence. What's more, when our money is on our own pockets, WE decide whether or not to help foreigners, layabouts, drug addicts, etc. When the government has the key to the cashbox, history tells us that it postively lavishes those groups with the dollars that decent and hard-working Americans toiled for.

There was a narrow window of opportunity back in the early 1980s in which municipalities were allowed the option of getting out of Social Security and setting up their own retirement plans. Galveston, Texas took advantage of that program and created its own plan. People in Galveston now retire with an income level two to three times that of their salary immediately prior to retirement. What's more, they keep the funds in their own account and may actually pass them along to their heirs in the event that the pass away before the funds are disbursed. Galveston proves that actual retirement accounts work and that they are vastly superior to the grossly socialist Social Security scam.

My Mom ended up in a nursing home, due to a stroke...she could still talk, but was paralized on one side and needed 24 hr care.

My Dad had to remove her name from the deed to their house, used car and $500 savings account. Dad only made $50 a week, until I was out of high school, then earned $100 per wk. Dad was crying one day and told me they didn't have much, but what they did have, they got together and it was killing him to take her name off these things.

My Dad was a good man and father, he worked at a time, most people didn't make much, he never took handouts, Mom stayed home and took care of us, which my brother & I are grateful, to know she was there when we returned from school.

I'm not sure on thisl, but I don't think there were 401K's at that time. They were married in 1935 and we were born in the 1940's.

Mom got Medicaid...then Dad died, and Mom's S.S. increased a tad. The nursing home took more from that S.S. after the raise, leaving Mom with 50 cents each month.

She would tell me and my brother to take money from her account, and buy Christmas and birthday presents...I bought my brothers' and he bought mine....we never told Mom she didn't have any money left.

All the Billions we continue to give in foreign aid, to those illegals that are here, to the pork in our government, etc. yet our government would rather do that, than try to really help our own people.

    It gets to me everyday.

Yesterday in Walgreens two women were talking so loudly and incessantly in another language in the next isle that I said "Caiete (sp?) sus bocas." They stopped a second, then talked quieter.

Today I picked up some videos. This adorable little girl was asking for candy stuff. Her parents kept responding in another language . She said to them "Speak in English." Without thinking I smiled at her and shook my head emphatically. But they never did...

We just had an article come out today that only 1% of our local kindergarteners this year were ready for it; knowing how to write name, knowing their letters, numbers, colors, etc... My city is doomed.

Have you time to write my city aldermen?

fedupinwaukegan, I can sympathize. It has gotten bad in the area, however, there are other places in the Portland Metro area that are worse off.

I have hopes, we have a new mayor, he is younger, has more definite opinions, and wants to fight the gang and crime problems that have been riddling our town, which tells me he is aware that the majority of the problems this town faces, are in the neighborhoods where all the illegals reside.

It is sad when once bucolic small towns go downhill. To me, Portland is long gone, the anarchists, leftists and socialists have taken a strong foothold, this is why I want to see my town be cleaned up, and preserved from all of this garbage.

I hope the same for you too.
