Trump Ends Refugee Ban, Puts Stricter Screening in Place

Trump Ends Refugee Ban, Puts Stricter Screening in Place

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration's worldwide temporary ban on refugees entering the U.S. ended Tuesday, with President Donald Trump signing an executive order allowing the resumption of admissions but with new, enhanced screening measures.

Under the enhanced security measures, the U.S. will now consider biographic data from refugee applicants, as well as analyze their social media presence.

According to a State Department memo reported by Reuters, required data will include phone, email and address information going back 10 years for all locations the applicants have lived for more than 30 days. Current phone numbers and email addresses for families of refugees will also be required.

The executive order, which comes at the end of a 120-day ban on most refugees, also put in place a 90-day review of 11 countries which the administration has previously deemed "high risk." The White House declined to name those countries.

During the review period, refugees from those countries will be considered on a "case by case basis," senior administration officials said Tuesday, with a look at whether their admission is in America's interest and whether they pose a threat to the security or welfare of the United States.

Asked by NBC News whether that review could, in the end, result in refugees from any of these 11 countries being denied entry, officials declined to comment.

In September, the Trump administration issued a new round of travel restrictions on foreigners from eight countries — Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen — but it is unclear whether those countries are among the 11 being reviewed.

Trump's controversial "travel ban," which temporarily halted the entry of refuges into the United States, was first issued in January and then again in March before being held up in court throughout the summer. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed the final lawsuit challenging the White House's original ban, but the legal battle is still ongoing in lower courts.

The ban came after a campaign where Trump repeatedly called for the blanket banning of all Muslims into the country and complained that refugees allowed into the United States could be a great "Trojan Horse" that could harm America if left unchecked.

There needs to be honest people who want to put "America First" handling the refugee cases. Interviewers don't need to do like DACA interviewers and background checkers did and just sign off on the majority of them.

There are too many people in the state department opposed to extreme vetting. Cleaning them out of the department will help.

So glad the new vetting procedures are now in place, which coupled with the dramatic reduction in refugee numbers from Obama's 110,000 with virtually no vetting to now Trump's 45,000 a year with extreme vetting including for men, women and children, we can possibly rest a little easier about the refugee mess. Hopefully, next year, Trump will reduce the 45,000 number to an even smaller number like 20,000. I mean that's the population of an entire small city in the United States, even at that level, that's a new sizable community every year just from refugees. UGH!!

The other serious issue to resolve ASAP is this phony asylum crap. FIRST, end all asylum claims from our hemisphere. SECOND, end all asylum claims from Europe, Russia, South Asia, Asia and Africa. I guess that leaves the Artic and Antartica. It's really cold there and they could probably use an asylum. So the new location isn't too drastic for them, we'll resettle them in Alaska.

    Problem solved.

Hopefully these new vetting measures will hurt efforts to keep refugees numbers high. Also, the United Nations should have no say in who is coming to the United States. They just spread more potential seeds of terrorism, non assimilation and other negative problems for the United States. Why we give them the time of day is hard to understand for millions of Americans.

The refugee agencies want the dollars per body and don't mind peddling people to our nation for citizens to support. They aren't concerned about vetting, just supplying more cheap labor under the guise of compassion while profiting along the way.

To repeat myself, it is most unsettling to give the United Nations any say in who gets the privilege to come here.

Oh I agree 100%. In fact, with regards to refugees, the UN should take full responsibility, establish safe zones in their own countries or neighboring countries, set up tents, sanitation, basic medical and food supplies, then secure the area until the crisis is over in their country after which the UN returns them to their homeland.

I kinda changed it around Judy. But the end result is the same. You are right about your calls for moratoriums on immigration.

The flow of "refugees" into the USA needs to be reduced to a small amount. We dont just need new vetting proceedures, we need refugee resettlement programs ended!

Yes, we need at least a 10 to 20 Year Moratorium on All Immigration. If we did this, we would wipe out poverty in the United States. All we've done with immigration is totally mess up our country and make poverty an American Staple. Disgusting. End it all, and watch Americans fix our country ourselves, would happen almost overnight, and those deficits would disappear and the debt could be paid off very quickly.

Shut down the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the US Department of Health and Human Services. Just get rid of it. Eliminate it from our budget, all of it. Give them no money to hand out. Make it and that awful Director, Scott Lloyd disappear from the federal budget. He is terrible, oh my God, what a Wack-O-Doodle.

Stop giving Churches ONE BILLION a year of our money to resettle refugees!

If Churches want to help them...get DONATIONS...and go help them on their soil.

Churches need to lose tax-exempt status and start paying TAXES. They have turned into nothing but a big money making business.
