On Oct. 23, police in Burlington arrested Aliaksandr Bychkou, 32, after he reportedly set fire to the College Street Congregational Church. He was discovered in the church's basement, as flames erupted from the steeple.
A week before the fire, Bychkou went to the Unitarian Church on Church Street and asked if he could climb into the building's steeple, according to detectives.
The suspect was also seen at the Burlington City Hall, asking specific questions as to the layout of the building.
A few days after his arrest, prosecutors discovered that Bychkou is in the country illegally.
The Burlington Free Press reported:
Deputy Chittenden County State's Attorney Mary Morrissey said she has since learned thatBychkou was warned four years ago that he was in the United States illegally and was facing a deportation proceeding in Boston in 2014.
"I understand he entered the country on a visa and overstayed," Morrissey said. "I was told he was picked up in Reno, Nevada, and was deportable."
Bychkou has been charged with second-degree arson and burglary, and is currently being held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in Swanton on an immigration detainer.
