Conservative Inc. Accepts Establishment Push for Gun Control
Conservative Inc. Accepts Establishment Push for Gun Control

On April 11, 2019, Turning Point USA Executive Director Charlie Kirk endorsed the federal government’s gun control status quo.
When trying to make the case for background checks for voting and illegal immigrants, Kirk said that he has “no problem with existing laws for background checks when it comes to firearms.”
This demonstrates an interesting divide in the right wing movement.
Some organizations like The National Association for Gun Rights and Gun Owners of America take a more hardline approach to gun rights. They see all gun control at the federal level, especially the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), as an infringement on the Second Amendment.
GOA founder Larry Pratt sees these types of infringements as part of a larger ploy to destroy the Second Amendment. In the case of the controversial bump stock ban, Pratt told the Christian Science Monitor that incremental forms of gun control are ways anti-gunners “can get momentum”.
Some researchers like John Lott have argued that crime rates were falling well before the implementation of the federal government’s background check system. In More Guns, Less Crime, Lott pointed out that decreasing crime rates started in 1991. The federal NICS system went into effect in 1998.
BLP has reported on growing tension between no compromise groups and establishment Republicans like Lindsey Graham who are trotting out their own gun control legislation like red flag laws.
Many of these groups see the potential for betrayal given that Florida, a state with firm Republican control of its legislature, ended up enacting red flag laws after the 2018 Parkland shooting.
In the past week, Texas Republican leadership shot down the idea of Constitutional Carry and embark on a coordinated media campaign against pro-gun organizations like Texas Gun Rights.
As the issue of gun control becomes more heated and the Left becomes even more openly anti-gun, conservatives and Republican elected officials will be placed under further scrutiny by no compromise gun groups.
At a time when there are open calls to repeal the Second Amendment, and when Establishment and even some “conservative” Republicans have accepted the leftist approach on gun control, many figures on the Right are moving to present a stronger defense against gun grabbers.
