THE Greek coast guard stopped searching for clandestine immigrants in the sea off the southern Peloponnese after claims of a boat wreck were found to be untrue, officials said.

The search was called off after a trawler was discovered on the small island of Elafonisos, off the southern Peloponnese coast, along with three men of undisclosed foreign nationality who were arrested.

The three men said they had sailed from Egypt, landing 57 clandestine immigrants on the neighbouring island of Antikythera today.

They had subsequently attempted to sail back to Egypt but ran aground on Elafonisos.

Some of the 57 migrants found on Antikythera told Greek authorities that they swam to shore after their boat foundered, and that 40 people remained in the water amid gale force winds.

Two helicopters and a Greek navy frigate were enlisted to search the area on Tuesday, but authorities had expressed doubts over the validity of the claims.

The mayor of Antikythera said that the 57 illegal immigrants, all men who identified themselves as Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian, have been given temporary shelter inside a monastery and a school on the island.

In terms of West Africa the primary destination seems to be the Canary Islands, which serves as a de facto detention center/guest-worker center for most of the aliens.

The amount of Morroccans who try to storm Spanish territory has surged over the past few years.
