employers staying in buisness
I've got a question. Where i live there is a painting company that about a year and a half ago got raided by immigration and was proved to not only employ illegals but had them living in a number of homes in wich the owner of the company owned. When all was said and done fines were all that was imposed. How is this company still in buisness. The company was not only employing and harboring these illegals but also had a hand in getting some of them here. It blows my mind.

Welcome Gil! Unfortunately MD is run by Casa de Maryland, or so it seems. They have strong backing in your State and political clout.

ummmm - there is nothing new about this. When I was a kid starting to use the family car my father specifically warned me against certain areas of our fair city for that reason - that foreigners were being brought in and housed in dormitory like situations (in regular houses) and kept to work as illegal slaves and so were desperate to escape. This was in CT. This has always been. A couple of years ago we looked at a magnificent house here in greater PX area that we really did like but it was evident that it had been used the same way and we could tell what national origin by knowing a bit about the culture - and it was not Mexican. We have a relatively new supermarket chain - Chinese and at the ends of their shifts the employees get into a company van and go to a company home. They were brought here to work like this despite huge local population that could have worked in the store.

In some cases, computer contracting firms operate the same way. They are also likely to use apartments or extended stay motels. These companies are formed on the fly, often by an Indian citizen who himself is here on an H-1B for another company (his day job). Then he and maybe some others form a company. This company then files for and sponsors other foreigners, usually from India, to come here on the new company's H-1Bs. They then shop the foreign workers around, underbidding American companies because they can pay their people much less. They edit their resumes as needed per project, and often skip out before any non-performance is noted. It's a big and lucrative scam.

no work
I'm an electrician and unfortunately i've been around it for 20 yrs. It's upsetting that we have a few million Americans that are layed off right now in this horrible economy. Our government knows that that could be helped, but greedy pockets prevail. All the jobs these illegals take could help real citizens get back to work.

Meant to say huge local population of Chinese descent who could have staffed the store. Ones who are now citizens, children of immigrants.
