FBI: Raid of Minn. home disrupted 'terror attack'

Associated PressBy AMY FORLITI | Associated Press – 3 mins ago...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The FBI says a potential terror attack that it believes was disrupted by a mobile home raid was in its "planning stages" and the target was believed to be in western Minnesota.

Buford Rogers was arrested Friday after a search of the 24-year-old's Montevideo home turned up Molotov cocktails, suspected pipe bombs and firearms.

FBI spokesman Kyle Loven wouldn't elaborate Monday about the nature or target of the alleged plot, but says authorities believe there "would have been a localized terror attack, and that's why law enforcement moved quickly."

The FBI says it believes authorities potentially saved the lives of several local residents. The investigation is ongoing.

Rogers is charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The FBI believes "a terror attack was disrupted" when authorities arrested a man after they converged on a mobile home in western Minnesota that contained Molotov cocktails, suspected pipe bombs and firearms, the agency said Monday.

Buford Rogers, 24, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He remains in federal custody and it is not clear if he has an attorney.

In a news release Monday, the FBI said it believes "the lives of several local residents were potentially saved" by the search and arrest. The agency said the terror plot was discovered through analysis of intelligence gathered by local, state and federal authorities. The statement doesn't offer further details about the extent or manner of the alleged plot.

"Cooperation between the FBI and its federal, state, and local partners enabled law enforcement to prevent a potential tragedy in Montevideo," Christopher Warrener, the special agent in charge of the FBI office in Minneapolis, said in Monday's release.

According to a federal affidavit obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, FBI agents from the domestic terrorism squad searched the property at the mobile home park in Montevideo and discovered the Molotov cocktails, suspected pipe bombs and firearms. The affidavit said Buford was there at the time of the search, and one firearm recovered from Buford's residence was a Romanian AKM assault rifle.

In an interview with authorities, Rogers admitted firing the weapon on two separate occasions at a gun range in Granite Falls, the affidavit said. Rogers has a past conviction for felony burglary and is not allowed to have a firearm.

Rogers is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court this week.

Rogers' 2011 felony burglary conviction stems from an incident in Lac qui Parle County. He also has a 2009 misdemeanor conviction for dangerous handling of a weapon in Hennepin County, as well as other criminal violations, according to online court records.

I would rather see ANYONE arrested BEFORE their bomb goes off rather than after.

Sure, but I would rather see the press remain focused on the systematic problems with our immigration system and borders that have resulted in the deaths of thousands instead of trying to divert from system failures to a common felon with a gun, a coke bottle, and a tank of gas.

FBI: Minnesota raid disrupts planned terror attack; police say suspect has militia ties

    Associated Press
Posted on May 6, 2013 at 8:30 PM

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The FBI says it has foiled a terrorist attack being planned in a small Minnesota town, and it believes "the lives of several local residents were potentially saved."

An agency spokesman says a search of a mobile home in Montevideo (mont-uh-VIHD'-ee-oh) uncovered a cache of explosives and weapons, leading to the arrest of Buford Rogers.

The FBI is offering no details about the targets of the attack or a motive. But police in the town say a homemade sign in front of the mobile home where the 24-year-old lived bore the letters "BSM," a reference to a local anti-government group called the Black Snake Militia started by Rogers' family.

Rogers' father tells KMSP-TV that the guns in the home were his and his son doesn't own any guns.

The younger Rogers made his first appearance in U.S. District Court in St. Paul Monday on one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Montevideo is a city of around 5,000 people about 130 miles west of Minneapolis.

    And in Arizona:

Police: Cleaning lady finds improvised explosive device

    Posted: May 07, 2013 8:49 PM PDT Updated: May 07, 2013 9:15 PM PDT
By FOX 10 News - Staff Report

TEMPE, Ariz. - An 18-year-old high school senior was arrested Tuesday after a cleaning lady found a device that was determined to be an improvised explosive device, Tempe Police said.

About 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, the housekeeper found the strange device while going about her cleaning duties.

She took the device to a Tempe fire station to be checked out, and also told them she had seen other suspicious materials at the residence.

When firefighters saw the device, they contacted Tempe Police's bomb squad. Bomb investigators came out and confirmed the device was a legitimate IED.

"They had it X-rayed they saw it was a valid IED. It was something that wasn't big but could cause serious injuries and the death of someone," said Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley.

They disabled the device and detectives responded to the home, located in the 1600 block of E. Candlestick Road. There, they found materials used for making improvised explosives, according to police.

They arrested Joshua Prater, an 18-year-old student at Marcos de Niza High School.

He was booked on charges of misconduct involving weapons and possessing a prohibited weapon.

It's not clear what Prater was intending to do with the device.

"Although he's a Marcos de Niza student there is no indication there was a threat to students. It's still an active situation, we don't know why he was making them, was he intending them for other use or what he was using them for," said Pooley.

    The investigation is ongoing.

This Minnesota story about the Black Snake Militia sounds suspicious to me. Molotov cocktails could be anything around the house composed of bottles, rags, and gasoline. It is not illegal to own the components to molotov cocktails.

The dad says the guns in the home were his and not his son's. The son has been arrested for being a felon in possession of guns his father says were his.

But the police keep talking about "suspected pipe bombs" and there is the rub. What is a suspected pipe bomb?

If there are no real pipe bombs found the feds may have trouble with this case.

Everyone remember about a year or so back when the feds made such a public spectacle out of their arrest of members of something called the Hutaree Militia?

Big headlines about the arrests, and then all the charges were dropped or beaten in court.

Thus, the FBI under Obama has a track record of making high profile 'militia' arrests and cooking up the case to make headlines for charges that won't stick in court. But regardless of the outcome of the charges, the propaganda hit in the press has been achieved.

And what creeps me out is that one of the bombers had just become a citizen this last Sept. 11th. Now that is really bizarre. Just keep em coming...and there won't be anything left of this country at all. It's already bad enough that we are becoming overpopulated putting a strain on our natural resources. But then they are going to attack us as well.

Rogers is charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

It looks like the charge is 'FELON in possession of a firearm". And, he admits being in possession by admitting he fired it on 2 occasions.
Rogers' 2011 felony burglary conviction stems from an incident in Lac qui Parle County. He also has a 2009 misdemeanor conviction for dangerous handling of a weapon in Hennepin County, as well as other criminal violations, according to online court records.
He is a convicted burglar and has convictions for dangerous handling of a weapon (what ever that is), and "other criminal charges" So we know the type of person he is.
