Immigration law needs NH support

As lawmakers adjourned for a five-week taxpayer-paid summer recess, the Democratic-dominated 110th Congress' approval rating has once again fallen to single digits. According to a new Rasmussen poll, our approval of Congress has reached one of the lowest ratings in 35 years, at 9 percent.

Indicative of the low approval most voters have of the 110th Congress were the findings on leadership members within the Democratic Party. Only 35 percent of Democratic voters have a favorable opinion of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Most voters (68 percent) believe members of Congress are more interested in furthering their own political careers than representing the interest of the American citizen. This is why our 110th Congress has become widely known as the "Do Nothing Congress."

While Congress was on recess, our borders remained unsecured while more than 60,000 illegal immigrants crossed our borders as economic refugees. Congress has a chance to do something now – that is the Secure American through Verification and Enforcement Act (SAVE Act – HR 408 Discharge Petition to turn off the job magnets.

The SAVE Act provides common sense solutions for addressing the illegal immigration crisis. The central tenet of the SAVE Act is a requirement for employers to verify the eligibility of workers to be employed in the United States. Without the job magnet, illegal immigrants will largely be forced to self-deport.

Pelosi and other pro-illegal immigration members are blocking movement on the bill. The SAVE Act supporters filed a discharge petition in the U.S. House of Representatives to force a floor vote.

Unfortunately, neither of New Hampshire's Democratic U.S. representatives, Paul Hodes and Carol Shea-Porter, have signed the discharge petition. Our representatives have decided to put special interest groups in front of the American citizens.

Illegal immigration is at the highest level in our nation's history. This is not the fault of the illegal immigrant that comes to the United States as an economic refugee, but rather the fault of the 110th Congress for not representing the interest of the American citizen.
