Around 2,000 migrants are expected to leave Italy per month as humanitarian residency permits expire, following the passage of the migration and security decree drafted by populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

The new migrant and security decree, which is set to come into effect in January 2019, scraps the humanitarian residency permit. Those currently living in Italy with the humanitarian permits will not be able to renew them and face deportation instead, Il Giornale reports.
The law will also affect those currently in the waiting process for the residency permit as they will find themselves labelled as illegal migrants and will be given two weeks’ notice to leave the country.
Of the total number of asylum seekers who have requested asylum with the Protection System for Asylum Seekers and Refugees (SPRAR), around 33 per cent have requested or obtained humanitarian residency permits that were previously renewable on a two-year basis.
By the end of 2020, an estimated 32,000 migrants are believed to be affected by the changes and see their residency revoked.
If the asylum seekers choose to remain in the country, they will be added to the already large population of illegals which is estimated to be as high as 500,000 by Interior Minister Salvini who promised to deport at least that many people during the campaign leading up to the Italian national election earlier this year.
After reducing the number of migrants coming into Italy by blocking access of Italian ports to migrant-transport NGOs, Mr Salvini has focused his attention on deportations, announcing he would be putting 500,000 euros towards a repatriation fund this year which would increase to 1.5 million euros in 2019 and 2020.
“More immigration means more delinquency, the numbers are clear,” Salvini said in September and added, “to have managed to reduce so many landings and arrivals, despite threats and complaints, is a reason for pride for me.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini stated Friday that the migrant and security decree he put together was a state law and must be followed. This is in the midst of the rebellion of some ten of 8,000 mayors, one of whom is Palermo’s Leoluca Orlando.
The mayors opposed to the decree say it unfairly strips asylum seekers of rights. Their enquiries to DIGOS resulted in a DIGOS security police visit to Palermo’s registry office after the Sicilian capital’s police chief denied their move.
“They asked us what happens when we want to regularise the position of an asylum seeker and what procedure we are following,” according to clerks account to reporters. DIGOS police allegedly enquired of the registrars of Orlando’s rejection fo the security degree alleging it breaches migrants’ Constitutional rights.
Palermo police chief has said the reports were “devoid of all foundations” while Deputy Premier and Labour and Industry Minister Luigi Di Maio has backed Interior Minister Salvini on the security decree, reminding any members of the government suffering “unease” over the decree should remember that they voted for it. Di Maio referred to the protest from the leftwing mayors as a “political boutade”.
Interior Minister Salvini explains that the decree is now State law signed by President Sergio Matteralla.
“There’s no row, there’s a State law, signed by the president of the republic and applied by 99% of mayors,” he said.
“There are ten mayors who are protesting out of 8,000 across Italy,” Salvini said explaining that the ‘party is over’ for the leftwing mayors who allegedly benefited from migrant business.
“With the (Democratic Party) it was chaos and clandestine migrants, with the League it is order and respect,” he said. “Certain mayors look back fondly on the good old times of immigration, but for them too the party is over!”.
Salvini also suggested that “Orlando and de Magistris, just quit,” and that mayors need to respect the President’s signature on the decree.

Italy’s Salvini keeps campaign promise and reduces number of migrant crossings by 80 per cent

Spain now leads in number of migrant crossings than any other European country. Whilst at the same time, crossings into Italy have fallen 80 per cent, Reuters reports.
The European border agency, Frontex, reported that 150,000 migrants entered EU countries illegally in 2018. Spain’s portion of those was double previous years’ having 57,000 using the now most active wroute through Morocco. Iraq and Syrian illegal migrants to Cyprus and Greece were up to 56,000.
On the other hand, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has kept his campaign promise of reducing illegal immigration to Italy.
They’ve seen an 80 per cent drop since Salvini said in June, “From today, Italy will also start to say no to human trafficking, no to the business of illegal immigration.” There were 23,000 crossings into Italy, the majority during the first half of the year.
It has become all too clear that Europeans want less migration and this shows with the rising popularity of populist politicians and governments, including the nationalist VOX party in Spain.
Salvini’s stance is working and citizens throughout Europe hope their governments will follow this trend.
