    Joe Arpaio, Republican Establishment Hero?

    Joe Arpaio, Republican Establishment Hero?

ALLAHPUNDITPosted at 10:01 pm on August 27, 2018

We’re 24 hours away from results in the interminable Arizona Senate GOP primary, a race that once looked like fertile ground for a populist uprising and now looks like an establishment* blowout in the making. (There’s a reason for the asterisk.) Late last year, when the primary was shaping up to be a one-on-one between establishment favorite Martha McSally and insurgent Kelli Ward, the momentum was entirely in Ward’s favor. She led in early polls and landed Steve Bannon’s endorsement at a rally in October, part of his national strategy to re-create the Trump revolution in Congress. He was going to get Trumpy populists nominated in Senate primaries and then count on Republican voters to duplicate the 2016 winning formula in the general election: “Whatever your misgivings about our nominee, anyone’s better than the Democrat.” Ward was all set to upend McSally and test that formula in November.

    1. In December, Bannon-backed Roy Moore blew a gimme Senate election in Alabama, badly damaging the “Republicans want populists!” argument.

    2. A few weeks later, Bannon’s role as a key source in Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury” was revealed, (momentarily) wrecking his relationship with Trump and exiling him from right-wing politics. His national strategy to elect populists derailed overnight, with Ward so fearful of being tainted by her association with him that she denied ever receiving his endorsement.

    3. Joe Arpaio suddenly decided in January that what he really wanted to do with his 85-year-old self, fresh off a pardon from his friend Donald Trump, was … to run for U.S. Senate in Arizona. Instantly the populist energy that had carried Ward to an early lead over McSally was diverted, splitting between Ward and old-school reactionary Sheriff Joe. Ward hung in there in polling, with McSally struggling for months to gain a decisive advantage, but feast your eyes on the latest RCP numbers. Thanks to Arpaio, who’s been in double digits since entering the race and was pulling a quarter of the vote as recently as early July, Ward simply couldn’t consolidate the right-wing vote. Until recently McSally hadn’t managed to exceed 36 percent in any poll since mid-June — but with Arpaio holding down her own vote share, Ward was stuck in the high 20s. Ward was so desperate in the final weeks of the campaign to win over Arpaio’s voters that she loaded up her campaign bus with reactionary heroes like Steve King and Mike Cernovich to impress them. But it’s probably too late. The last polls of the state had McSally at 47-48 percent, more than 20 points ahead. It looks like, with the two populists canceling out each other’s chances of victory, late deciders are going for the establishment choice.

And so a question that I’ve asked before arises again: Did Sheriff Joe do Trump a favor by running for Senate? To his credit, POTUS has refused to endorse Ward or his pal Arpaio, no doubt fearing an Alabama replay in Arizona if the Bannon strategy prevailed. McConnell and other establishmentarians leaned on him behind the scene not to endorse either populist as well, knowing how that might kill McSally’s chances. So Trump stayed out of it. But I wonder, did he actually intervene on McSally’s behalf by nudging Arpaio to run in the first place, knowing that Arpaio would pull votes from Ward? If you think that strategy is too sophisticated for Trump, rest assured that it’s not too sophisticated for Cocaine Mitch. Nor does it mean that Arpaio ran as a knowing stalking horse for the establishment; it could be that he was quietly encouraged by friends of the White House to run and he did so earnestly, not realizing that Team Trump wanted him in the race only to torpedo Ward’s chances, not to actually win. If that’s what happened, all signs point to it working like a charm.

As for that asterisk for McSally, she may be an establishmentarian but she wasn’t so foolish as to run as an establishmentarian. She’s a newly minted Trumpist!

McSally chose to reinvent herself as a Trump acolyte. She withdrew her sponsorship of legislation to protect children brought to the U.S. illegally from deportation and removed video clips from her YouTube account defending these so-called Dreamers. Her announcement video included an edited clip of Trump praising her from the Rose Garden. She hit the trail with former governor Jan Brewer, a prominent Trump backer. McSally’s supporters flooded social media with photographs of her in the Cabinet Room, two seats away from Trump as he talked about immigration. Her surrogates bragged about McSally’s invitations to movie nights at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

In some ways, the makeover is working. At least seven times, Trump has name-checked McSally at official events. The latest came on Aug. 13, when Trump saluted her as he signed a military spending bill at Fort Drum in upstate New York. “I’ve gotten to know her very well, and she is terrific,” the President said, noting her combat flight experience.

We’re all populists now. Even the fake populists who are jussssst populist enough to get elected.
And of course there are some genuine populists who are fake establishmentarians when need be. Exit question: Who said this? “The hard thing we have to do is convince the Trump voters that: ‘Hey, there may be a RINO in your congressional district, you may not like the guy, he may not like Trump. It doesn’t matter. That fight is past us.'” Yep, you guessed it.

McConnell didn't have to lean on Trump very hard, and neither did Yoder. They are all in it together, and will allow Trump to skate free by blaming them on his twitter feed.

No, that strategy isn't too complicated for Trump, it is that Trump hopes that strategy is too complicated for most of his base to figure out.

Joe Arpaio knew exactly what he was doing when he entered the race (splitting votes with Kelli Ward). Shame on Joe. So instead of getting Ward, we're going to end up with RINO McSally. Yes, it is possible Joe Arpaio was a ringer to knock Kelli Ward out and give the seat to RINO McSally.

Senate term is 6 years and Joe Arpaio is 85 years old. So he would be 91 or 92 after one term in the Senate.

For the record, ALIPAC practically begged Joe Arpaio to get out of the race. But he did not listen to us or anyone else and he stayed in and threw the race to DC insider RINA Amnesty supporter female McCain... Martha McSally.

In doing so, Joe Arpaio has lost a lot of support and esteem among many Americans who followed his career and supported him intensely for many years.

We knew the moment retired Sheriff Joe Arpaio jumped into this race as a spoiler very late in the race that Ward's chances of overcoming the DC establishment dropped significantly.

Yep, what Sheriff Joe did is something he should be ashamed off in my opinion. He full well knew what was at stake and knew he was going to give the win to McSally. The only question that remains is, was it intentional?

This strategy of splitting the conservative vote is par for the course here in NC. It makes me so angry that people fall for it every time! If Sheriff Joe didn't realize what was going to happen, he doesn't have the smarts to hold that kind of office anyway.

So what's your solution? The party leaders pick a person for you to vote for, and we do away with primaries? Primaries were supposed to be a party event to pick the best candidate to represent the party in the election. Unfortunately, in order to win a primary, candidates tear their opponents apart. This negative publicity becomes fodder for the opposition to use against the winner in the election. This is kind of the candidate's fault as, as opposed to comparing their positive attributes to other candidates, they focus on the negatives to destroy their opposition.

If we let leadership only pick candidates, the corruption will just get worse. Like I asked, what's your solution?

By getting a vote splitter to run, the party leaders are already picking the candidate. Here in NC, if a strong conservative runs for Congress or the Senate, our GOP will often get another strong conservative to run also, which spits the conservative vote and allows their choice of an Establishment candidate (usually a RINO) to win, especially since the primary winner only has to receive 30% of the vote. They use this strategy to pick who they want to win. This is how Thom TIllis was elected. Our so-called "leaders" win either way. I wish I had an answer to correct this problem. Here in NC, the Constitution Party has recently gained ballot access so that may help with the problem since that is a more conservative party.

While they may have an advantage, anybody can become a "vote spiltter". Ross Perot allegedly took votes away from President GHW Bush to give us Clinton as President. I feel he could have won but for the negative campaign by conservatives that a vote for Perot was a vote for Clinton. Many who would have voted for him bought that argument. Even though, he got about 19% of the vote with no party support. He was not a party-leader favorite. There was Jessie Ventura who seems to have come out of nowhere. No big money, no party support, just a message that voters went for. And of course, there is President Trump, who was certainly not a favorite of party-leaders. In fact there was floated the idea of Candidate Trump running as an independent. So your paranoia about party-leaders being able to appoint their favored candidate is overrated. We have George Soros, Tom Steyer and other rich people sponsoring what or who they want.

California has an election process that I have thought would be good before we had it. I had seen elections where the two best candidates, IMHO, were from the same party. And I would have liked the voters to have the choice between those two. But now, under those rules, we have several races where only Democrats are the two choices and many conservatives are crying foul. And I'm not happy with the choices I am left with. There seems to be no winning method as long as parties are in charge. To an extent I would prefer a wide-open primary where all of the people vote for all the candidates and the top two go into a runoff. Ideally we would get the two best candidates to choose from. Remember, Donald Trump took on 15 other candidates, many preferred over him, and came out as the candidate. Party-leaders did not pick him!
