ATLANTA - Day laborers are used all over Metro Atlanta for cash paying jobs. However, those days are numbered if a Georgia legislator has his way.

State Senator Jeff Mullis has introduced a bill to ban the hiring of day laborers. The proposal has sparked debate on what it may or may not do for the state of Georgia.

D.A. King is an independent consultant who has worked with Georgia lawmakers to craft previous legislation aimed at illegal immigration.

"The goal is attrition though enforcement, to encourage people in the country illegally to leave Georgia. The real villains in this are the people that hire the black market labor," said King.

"Are we going to go after the teenagers that come knock on your door, wanting to cut your lawn? That happens all across Georgia, all over the suburbs. They're day laborers," said Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials.

Gonzalez said enforcing the law would be a problem when Georgia lawmakers are struggling with red ink.

"Georgia's budget is in a hole. How are we going to pay for it? So, this is bad for Georgia's business," said Gonzalez.

"If we take away the illegal labor, we're going to have to hire legal labor, which was the original plan," said King.

Sen. Mullis said in a statement, "The people of Georgia deserve a measure that most appropriately deals with Georgia's most pressing needs, without hurting businesses."

Put the law on the books and let Law Enforcement figure out a way to enforce it. Main job is getting the blasted laws put on the books. Pass the laws and it takes away 3/4 of the lies and smoke and mirror games the latinos are throwing around.

In most cases these are pre teens looking to make a buck , not latino illegal aliens hanging on street corners , leering at woman, getting drunk and urinating in public , end of discussion

Heck I would hire a kid to mow the lawn or shovel the snow. First thing is he needs to speak english as I would want to make sure he understood what the job was. English spoken on this property. If thats profiling..then get over it.

I gotta agree. I'd rather the bill worded better such as day laborers banned w/o going through a day laborer hiring organization that checks credentials and has all normal forms filled out. One I know of is Labor Ready.

But then also have it stating this only goes towards those working for a legitimate business or legitimate business field. Dunno how to word it but def needa make sure doesn't hurt like kids trying to shovel snow or mow lawns for a buck, or little kids selling lemonade on the street corner.... but we can go after those evil girlscouts peddling their cookies at every street corner....

Listen you A-hole, your illegal invaders have stolen those jobs from American kids, just like they have stolen everything else in this country. They take what they want and be damned if you don't like it!

What should we expect from another racist, latino organization. I'm
sick of these "latino associations", that do nothing but aid and abet illegal invaders out of loyality to their raza!

This gives the state a new source of revenue--fines on those breaking the new law. Duh!
