If one still thinks that the country has way too many immigrants, please just indicate so to the temporary workers entering the country and do not mislead them that their is the possibility of immigrating here. All I am asking here is, do not offer legal immigrants in this country hope only to later take it away. That would make the decision of whether to further pursue the intent to immigrate here much easier for people like me. I have far too much vested interest to go to another country (either my own or a different one) at this time, although I would if I was asked to. If I were told a few years back that I cannot immigrate then my decision would have been much simpler.

Truly, I didn't know for some time that temporary workers were on the 'pathway'.

I don't think that should be part of the program.

It was presented to the American people, at least I understood it that way, the temporary workers, especially skilled workers, were just that - temporary. Temporary as in length of employment and stay here and temporary as in only necessary until we could educate our own people.

    I guess I was wrong -

A Legal one who's waiting for their green card and work permit can't do anything!

This is a true question - not a bait. I am just learning all the various ways people come to this country - I truly didn't know.

How are you here legally, but without a green card?

I crossed the boarder when I was 16 years old. My father had a green card, and my mother was here on an International Student Visa. The American Embassy in Toronto wouldn't let me get any type of legal status in the USA. So I got separated from my family at the boarder. A week later Border Patrol decided that because I'm 16, that technically they can't separate me from my parents. They had to let me across the border. B.P said that I would be under my mother's visa until I turn 21.

I know this was in response to gingersnaps. But I will respond to it anyway as it may help educate some that aren't aware of what's out there today.

I believe there are different classes of work visas. Those that can lead to immigration and those that cannot.

In my case, I chose the one that had the ability to immigrate. I made the mistake of waiting too long to decide whether I wanted to immigrate or not. If I had come to the country with the intent to immigrate, then I would have been an immigrant by this time. Sadly, I had no such intent initially.

gingersnaps Excuse my questions, but the way I learn many things is by asking.

The US does NOT need more legal high tech workers - H1b's or others.

This is the most contentious topic and has been for a while, not because the facts are not there, but primarily because some of the facts are misconstrued. I will not comment on this as I am pretty sure that this would flare up.

I would like to point one thing out though, that for each of the points made against H1B workers, I personally have not encountered those in my work life. Many of my friends who are on that visa have not either.

I have been treated fairly. I work in a specialized area that requires specialized knowledge and requires speaking at various events. I had the relevant experience before I got into this country.

I know that there are companies that use it for selfish purposes. I think these cases are certainly bad and it requires some shaking up of the current laws to adapt to the necessary needs. Hopefully the government will take the effort to look at both problems, immigration and temporary work visas (that may or may not lead to immigration) fairly and that was the topic for the initial post.

It is useful to note that the two, immigration and temporary workers, are quite orthogonal primarily because the topic of temporary workers has nothing to do with immigration in any direct way other than that the temporary H1B visa's provide the holder the ability to immigrate.

Yuppers. It's ok to ask me anything.... The only way people learn is by asking.

The facts were construed before but now they are well known that the visa program was a scam and everybody now knows it.

While illegal immigration is an important topic, legal immigration should be an equally important topic. Most candidates [1] are thinking of legalizing illegal immigration.

I have been in this country for about 10 years now and have only lately decided to immigrate to this country. However, there has been significant backlogs in the legal immigration process. Should I have to wait another 10 years before I become a legal immigrant?
#1- MOST CANDIDATES WHO WANT TO LEGALIZE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION(AMNESTY) ARE TRAITORS AND WILL NOT BE VOTED IN. ULTIMATELY, IT SHOULD REMAIN A DECISION BY THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, NOT A HANDFUL OF POLITICIANS WHETHER OR NOT TO CHANGE OUR IMMIGRATION POLICY.

#2 - It looks as though you either overstayed your visa or our crappy system lost you somehow. The bottom line is you don't belong in the U.S. legally and need to leave.
