NYPD reportedly halts marijuana 'buy-and-busts'

The NYPD has killed the marijuana “buy and bust.”

The crime-fighting staple that often led to gun seizures and arrests on outstanding warrants was axed in a desperate attempt by the de Blasio administration to regain dwindling support with minorities, sources told The Post.

The head of each borough’s narcotics unit was summoned to 1 Police Plaza last week and told, “The powers that be don’t want to see any more of these [pot] arrests,” sources said.

An angry source called it a calculated move by city leaders.

“Of course, this comes from City Hall and [Mayor] de Blasio. This is all about arresting minorities, and this is just one way to arrest less minorities,’’ the source said.

De Blasio is under increased pressure from leaders in minority communities.

He promised last year on the campaign trail to curb pot busts, saying they have “disastrous consequences’’ on minority suspects and their relations with police.

Blacks and Hispanics have accounted for 86 percent of low-level pot busts this year, and the rate of minority drug arrests is on pace to potentially exceed the numbers under Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

The War on Drugs is a horrific endeavor.

Let's be honest, the same detectives who've been arresting minorities, could also have been observing sales, then arresting the buyers, too. Hmmm.

All the "war" has accomplished - or ever will accomplish - is to incarcerate young people before they even have a chance to learn what it means to become responsible adults. That's good news for prison guards, but bad news for the rest of us.

When I was a young man, young people could easily get part time jobs. I started when I was eleven. (The child labor laws were different then.) Many of the others in my neighborhood already had part time employment by the time they were fourteen. Now employers can easily substitute full-time illegals for part-time Americans. And the illegals will work for any wage and won't even think about complaining.

We really do need a moratorium on immigration, while we decide our national goals and national needs. Right now we are seriously overstocked with immigrants. Even Americans STEM grads can't get work. Yikes.

More like buyer stops long enough to make a purchase, then goes away. It doesn't take long before the locations become known. If observing from the street is difficult, the police will rent a house or an apartment from which they can observe and even photograph. So it's not all that difficult to arrest non-minority buyers, if the political will is there - which, IMO, it usually is not.

It's not at all unusual for buyers and sellers to meet at a border location. That way the seller doesn't stand out so much, and the buyer doesn't have to worry about being robbed.

In the smart-phone era, connections are sometimes made at social occasions, such a dances and concerts.

At any rate our current policy primarily benefits plain clothes cops and prison guards, but long term everybody else pays.
