Lindsey Graham Lied To Voters When He Said That He Voted To Defund Obamacare

It’s peculiar, to say the least, that Sen. Lindsey Graham continues to call himself a Republican, when his heart and values so clearly lie with the Democrat party. Of course, as long as he’s open and above-board with his constituency, they are welcome to continue to vote for this “Republican In Name Only.” But what happens when he starts lying in the face of primary challenges from genuine conservatives? Well, that’s when the alternative media (that would be us) steps in to let you know what’s going on.

Graham’s big lie of the day is a letter that he sent to his constituents stating “Today, I proudly voted to defund Obamacare, and I am proud that every Senate Republican united in support of the House-passed provision to defund Obamacare.” This is a classic example of a lie by omission.

Yes, Graham did vote “yes” on a continuing resolution (“CR”) that came before the Senate that had within it a clause defunding Obamacare. What Graham is hiding from voters is the fact that he had earlier voted for cloture, allowing the bill to come to the floor in the first place – which, procedurally, was a bad thing. This is not a boring procedural issue, but a major point.

As you recall, the House passed a CR that would fund every part of the federal government except for Obamacare. When the CR went to the Senate, it was set for a cloture vote. If the CR passed cloture, that gave Senate majority leader Harry Reid permission to “clean it up,” meaning that he could strip out the language defunding Obamacare by a simple majority vote. If it didn’t pass cloture, the Senate would be forced to debate the bill, which would allow Republicans to make their arguments against Obamacare and Democrats would be forced to defend a law Americans love to hate. Ted Cruz’s filibuster was to prevent a cloture vote, forcing debate and, with luck, requiring agreement from 60 Senators before Reid could strip the bill of language defunding Obamacare.

Lindsey Graham’s dishonest letter to voters

Ted Cruz’s filibuster failed, and it failed in part because of Republicans like Graham who enthusiastically voted to let the CR pass cloture and get to the Senate floor. Then, Graham and these other “Republicans” cast symbolic votes for the CR, knowing that the Democrat majority would ensure that the CR would never pass. That’s exactly what happened: the Democrat Senate, without debate, voted against the CR, which returned to the House.

If you’re a genuine conservative in South Carolina, pay very careful attention during the primaries. If you like what Lindsey Graham has done for your state and this country, by all means vote for him. But please, vote for him knowing what he’s actually done, not for what he just pretends to have done.
