The List: Unnecessarily Shut Down by Obama to Inflict Public Pain

While our president still enjoys his essential employees and locations: the White House chefs, Camp David, and a military golf course, there doesn't seem to be any question that in mercenary pursuit of a political win, this White House is determined to unreasonably punish as many everyday people as possible. And this includes children sick with cancer. That might sound like hyperbole, but it is not.

Although Barack Obama's chefs have been deemed "essential," employees at the National Institutes of Health who offer last-chance experimental cancer treatments for children suffering from cancer have not. Worse still, House Republicans have offered to compromise with the president and single the NIH out for funding. The White House has threatened a veto.

Using children sick with cancer as pawns is community organizing on steroids. And the media are covering for him. When the media thought they could emotionally blackmail the GOP with these sick children, telling their story was all the rage. Now that it is Obama and Senate Democrats wrist-flicking refusing treatment for these children, suddenly the media aren't too interested in telling their story.


There are many other examples of this president's cold-hearted fanaticism and willingness to punish people for reasons that seem to have much more to with spite than what is and is not "essential." In fact, there are a number of examples where Obama seems to be spending more money and using more resources to close and block and inconvenience than to just leave it alone.


The media may or may not report on these individual occurrences, but what they will never do is provide the American people with the full context and scope of Obama's shrill pettiness.


Below is a list of illogical, unnecessary, and shockingly spiteful moves our government is making in the name of essential and non-essential.

1. Treatments for Children Suffering From Cancer - The GOP have agreed to a compromise by funding part of the government, including the National Institutes of Health, which offers children with cancer last-chance experimental treatment. Obama has threatened to veto this funding.


2. The World War II Memorial - The WWII memorial on the DC Mall is a 24/7 open-air memorial that is not regularly staffed. Although the White House must have known that WWII veterans in their eighties and nineties had already booked flights to visit this memorial, the White House still found the resources to spitefully barricade the attraction.


The Republican National Committee has offered to cover any costs required to keep the memorial open. The White House refused. Moreover, like the NIH, the GOP will pass a compromise bill that would fund America's national parks. Obama has threatened to veto that bill.


3. Furloughed Military Chaplains Not Allowed to Work for Free - Furloughed military chaplains willing to celebrate Mass and baptisms for free have been told they will be punished for doing so.


4. Business Stops In Florida Keys - Although the GOP have agreed to compromise in the ongoing budget stalemate and fund the parks, Obama has threatened to veto that funding. As a result, small businesses, hunters, and commercial fisherman can't practice their trade. While the feds have deemed the personnel necessary to keep this area open "non-essential," the "enforcement officers" to ensure no business is done are "essential."


5. Obama Blacks Out Sports, Entertainment Programming to Overseas Troops - The American Forces Network (AFN) that provides American sports and entertainment programming to our troops stationed abroad, has been shut down. For some reason, though, AFN News will still broadcast news, just not any of the popular and fun stuff.


Camp David is essential, but popular programming for heroes overseas is non-essential.


6. Obama Closes D-Day Memorial - The GOP have offered to compromise and fund the National Parks. Obama has said he will veto this compromise legislation. As a result, along with 24 other military cemeteries, the D-Day memorial in Normandy has been barricaded.


7. Obama Tries to Close Privately-Funded Mt. Vernon - Although George Washington's Mt. Vernon estate is privately funded, the feds blocked visitors from entering the parking area because the Park Service maintains the lot. Apparently, the New Media publicity resulted in the feds backing down.


8. Obama Closes Over 100 Privately-Managed Parks That Cost No Money to Run - The U.S. Treasury actually makes money from the rent paid by a private company that "employs about 400-500 camp workers and managers across about a dozen states." No federal money is used to operate these parks. No federal employees are used to staff these parks. Taxpayers make a profit from these parks. Still, Obama had them closed and as a result 400-500 employees and a private business are taking it in the neck.


9. Obama Closes Self-Sustaining Colonial Farm It Hasn’t Supported Since 1980 - "For the first time in 40 years, the National Park Service (NPS) has finally succeeded in closing the Farm down to the public. In previous budget dramas, the Farm has always been exempted since the NPS provides no staff or resources to operate the Farm.”


10. Obama Tries to Close State-Run Parks in Wisconsin - "The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion's share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers."


11. Obama Closes Vietnam Memorial - The GOP have passed compromise legislation that would fund national memorials and parks, and open them to the public. Obama threatened a veto. Apparently, the "essential" government employees are those erecting barricades, not those who could keep the memorial open.


12. Obama Closes Privately-Owned Hotel, Police Block Parking Lot - "The operator of a 51-room inn located on U.S. government-owned land in North Carolina abandoned his defiant stance on Thursday to keep the property open despite being ordered to close as part of the federal government shutdown."

October is this inn's prime season. The GOP have offered compromise funding opening the parks. Obama said he will veto that compromise.


State troopers blocked customers from entering the inn's parking lot.


13. Park Service Ranger: 'We've Been Told to Make Life As Difficult For People As We Can' - “It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

Imagine how simplistic our lives would all become if Washington DC were closed down forever, we had a fair flat tax, and Americans were once again in the position to govern themselves instead of a few hundred greedy bastards looking out for their own asses and the interests of the global elitists.

We have already seen, in multiple cases, a clear effort by the Obama administration to use the National Park Service to inflict public pain.

From the effort to block off Mount Vernon, which is run by private funds, to actually spending more money and manpower to shut off open air memorials, the administration has made it clear the effort in shutting these things down is not about saving money, but about using these actions to make a political point.

A senior administration official actually fluffed off the shutdown, noting that “they were winning” so they didn’t care about the shutdown (or who it might hurt).

Now the Washington Times is actually reporting an angry park ranger says park rangers were specifically told to “make life as difficult for people as we can”.

Washington’s grown a bit nastier and colder since the last government shutdown, and the casualties of the partisan fight are the family memories lost from being denied access to public landmarks that are supposed to belong to the people. The government doesn’t see it that way anymore – it’s all just a “damn game” and the folks running the Capitol are just toying with the American people.
That’s right – public memorials, monuments and parks remained open under President Clinton and the Republican Congress in 1995/96, causing one to wonder how much inconvenience and financial hardship this partial government shutdown is creating is actually necessary.
Nonetheless, American parks, memorials and monuments across are shuttered today, despite many of them being privately funded and run at no expense to the taxpayer and despite Republicans passing bills to keep them running while the two parties negotiate on funding the government.
The following list of 13 parks and monuments and how they were affected by the government slowdown shows exactly what kind of ridiculous nonsense is going on in America nowadays.
1. Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin

Governor Scott Walker is defying a federal order to shutdown Wisconsin state parks like Devil’s Lake, which is one of the state’s revenue-generating “crown jewels.” Walker directed his cabinet to “streamline things and make sure services are available,” a state official said, according to The Hill.
That’s right. When funds run low in business, you cut back and eliminate waste, you don’t shut down.
2. Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

Meanwhile, at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard offered to keep the Mount Rushmore National Memorial open with state workers. The National Park Service told state officials it was required to use federal employees, and not state employees, at the monument.
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Tony Venhuizen, a spokesman for the governor remarked:

“It makes sense for the federal government to shut things down because there isn’t funding available, but it doesn’t make sense to close something because they are trying to make a point. Our offer still stands if there is a change of heart on the part of federal officials. We certainly would be pleased to talk to them if they seem interested.”

3. Blue Ridge Mountains, NC

The Inn is a private business that receives no federal money, but happens to be located near a park run by the National Park Service. Does this seem like the behavior of a representative government that respects people’s private property rights?
Owner Bruce O’Connell told Breitbart News:

“All we do is pay the government money. We don’t take anything from them.”

4. Claude Moore Colonial Farm, VA

On Wednesday, the PJ Tatler broke the story of the National Park Service closing the Claude Moore Colonial Farm. The farm has been self-sufficient since the federal government cut its funding in 1980 and now receives no federal funds.
But according to the Tatler, the National Park Service “ordered the park closed and placed barricades at its facilities. It has also threatened anyone who enters the park with arrest.” Managing Director Anna Eberly said that the farm has been…

…“critical of the National Park Service because we think they have closed us down illegally according to the terms of the agreement we signed with them in 1981.”

5. Lincoln Park, D.C.

Lincoln Park in Washington D.C., located near several powerful Democratic Senators’ residences, has remained open, according to sources that told the Daily Caller. Senator Max Baucus was seen strolling through the park after the government “shutdown.”
The NPS press office did not respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment, likely because no one is working at the press office (although NPS teams have been dispatched to close off public monuments around the Capitol — just not Lincoln Park, apparently).
6. Yellowstone National Park, WY

At the country’s first national park, all entrances were closed on Tuesday morning and day visitors were directed to find the nearest exit, a park spokesman told the Wall Street Journal. At Pahaska Tepee Resort, just outside of Yellowstone park, manager Angela Coe said that some guests were cutting their trips short and had checked out tourists from China, Thailand and France. She told WSJ:

“This is just very disappointing. We have people from all over the world who want to see Yellowstone and they can’t get in.”

7. Statue of Liberty, NY

The Statue of Liberty is run by the federal government and requires security screening for visitors onto Liberty Island. Statue Tours are licensed by concession to provide ferry rides to the island at passenger expense, but are currently only able to provide a grand view of the 151 foot tall monument to freedom.
8. Turtle Park, Washington D.C.

“Turtle Park” is a small, local park in Washington D.C. run by the Friends of Friendship. It was shuttered because of the partial government shutdown, although local residents were reported by the Daily Caller as constantly playing a game of remove the barricades — forcing park police to constantly return and close it back off at taxpayer expense.
This type of petty insistence on selectively closing even small, mostly charity-maintained parks shows the kind of vindictiveness we are dealing with — and it’s all to lead people to blame the Republicans for harming citizens, even though the National Park Service is purposefully harassing residents at the behest of superiors. 9. “Old Faithful,” WY

A signature feature of Yellowstone National Park (see above), the hot springs geyser “Old Faithful” was being guarded by park police this week. One figures if the National Park Service can dispatch public employees to block off and watch landmarks like a hawk, they can put them there to help people see the sites.
According to the WSJ, locals helped pay for snowplowing at Yellowstone when the national park couldn’t afford it because of automatic federal budget cuts known as the sequester. Renny MacKay, a spokesman for Wyoming’s Republican Governor Matt Mead, said:

“The closure of national parks and monuments in Wyoming creates a significant economic hardship on many small businesses in nearby communities.”

10. Mount Vernon, VA

As previously reported by Mike Miller, the National Park Service (NPS) tried to shut down George Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate Tuesday as part of the government shutdown. There was only one problem: Mount Vernon is funded entirely by private contributions.

Melissa Wood, Mt. Vernon’s media director, said the NPS removed barricades it had placed at the entrance to a parking lot “as soon as they realized their mistake.” However, Stephen Gutowski of The College Politico tweeted that one the estate’s parking lots was still barricaded as of Thursday.
11. Grand Canyon, CO

Also as reported by Mike Miller, the selective barricading of national parks and monuments continues, “due to the government shutdown,” and tourists are being turned away from the Grand Canyon, despite Arizona’s push to reopen it with state funds.
As reported by Fox News, Gov. Jan Brewer wants to reopen the iconic part with state money, but her proposal was rejected Thursday by park superintendent Dave Uberuaga, who said such a plan isn’t an option. An estimated 2,200 people who work at the Grand Canyon National Park and its hotels have been furloughed as a result of the government slimdown that began Tuesday.
An angry Park Service ranger told the Washington Times:

“We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

12. WW2 Memorial, Washington D.C.

The National Park Service dispatched security teams at taxpayer’s expense this week to barricade a charity funded, 24 hour-a-day, open-air WWII memorial to obstruct veterans’ visitation through the charity organization Honor Flight. Veterans busted through the barriers, anyway, with a little help from friends and lawmakers.
According to Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio President Lee Armstrong, he called the National Park Service, which responded like this:

He says they are considering going ahead with the trip even if the government is still on shutdown, but when he called the parks service, he was told they would face arrest.
…“I said, are you kidding me? You’re going to arrest a 90/91-year-old veteran from seeing his memorial? If it wasn’t for them it wouldn’t be there.” She said, ‘That’s correct sir.’

13. The Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.

President Obama has selectively dispatched National Park Service workers to purposefully inconvenience Americans to score partisan political points against his adversaries in Congress. That’s simply incredible, but not surprising coming from the man who shut off White House tours under the sequester, but still hosted private parties there.

With South Dakota’s most famous park, Mt. Rushmore, many people can stop along the highway and take pictures because… Well, because IT’S A MOUNTAIN.

But the Obama administration won’t have any of that.

They have actually gone to the step of putting parking cones along the highway, so you can’t stop and take a freaking picture of the nation’s most famous mountain from the road, as I did above.

Even worse, Tim Johnson’s office is defending the practice.

“It’s all closed up,” the newspaper quoted North Collins, N.Y., resident Hilde Werneth as saying. “They won’t even let you stop and take a picture. You can only drive by.”

And…

Perry Plumart, a spokesman for Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson, said closing Mount Rushmore hurts visitors, businesses and furloughed park rangers.

“The best way to restore access to all national parks, including Mount Rushmore, is for Speaker Boehner and the House to pass a clean continuing resolution and end the government shutdown,” Plumart said.

Nothing about putting cones on a public highway being outrageous? Just a pithy comment about passing a clean resolution? What’s next? Johnson defending them putting a tarp over the monument?

If Johnson opposes it, he needs to do more than send his spokes-monkey out to parrot the administration’s talking points. He needs to give us a real opinion about blocking South Dakota highways so people can’t take pictures of a mountain.

Here’s what right-headed people have to say about blocking the view from the highway:

“It disgusts me that taxpayer resources were used on this act of stupidity,” Rep. Kristi Noem said. “This is federal government arrogance at its worst.”

Sen. John Thune said he had seen photos of the coned-off viewing areas, and he said it’s “outrageous” if federal officials are barring people from pulling over and taking pictures from the highway.

“It seems to me, on a lot of levels — and we saw this out here with the World War II Memorial — the administration wants to make this as painful as possible,” Thune said, referring to barricades around the memorial.

Thune said the Senate could easily take up spending bills to fund parks and other specific items rather than an overall spending bill, but he said Democrats have refused. “They, obviously, prefer to have the issue and not the solution,” he said.

Read that here, and keep in mind that it’s the Obama administration and democrats who want to put virtual tarps over Mt. Rushmore.

The Federal Government Park Shutdown is nothing more than ploy, and they put the exclamation point behind that here in South Dakota.
