Thursday at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, PA, President Donald Trump said he would “personally prefer” to shut down the government before the midterm elections in November if Congress does not pass funding for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump said, “We are going to be taking some very tough actions. I don’t know if it’s before the election or after the election. You know a lot of the Republicans say, and they are good, they are good, we need more Republicans, and they are friends of mine, and they say president, you know –some of them are really tough guys —and they say, ‘Sir, we are better off if we wait until afterwards.'”
He continued, “I say it’s better before. Let’s do it before. You know who thinks It’s better to do it before? Rush Limbaugh thinks it should be before, before the election. You know who else? He expressed his desire to force a shutdown fight with Democrats before the election.
“You know who thinks it should be before?” he asked. “Rush Limbaugh says it should be before the election, Sean Hannity, a lot of them. Great people.”
He acknowledged, however, that many “well-meaning” Republicans wanted him to wait until after the mid-term elections.
“They say, ‘We have the best economy ever, we are doing great, maybe we don’t want to complicate it,’” Trump said. “I understand it, I’m a little torn myself. I would personally prefer before.”
Trump suggested on Sunday that he was willing to force a government shutdown if Congress failed to fund the wall on the Southern border, end chain migration, and end catch-and-release laws.
He discussed the idea with Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday.
“I happen to think it’s a great political thing because people want border security,” Trump said.

President Trump continued to threaten a government shutdown if his planned border wall is not funded by Congress, joking about a new way to ensure the barrier is finally built.
He told a crowd in Pennsylvania Thursday night that Democrats oppose any policy he supports.
"Anything I want, they want to oppose. I just figured out how to do the wall: I'll say I don't want to build the wall and they'll insist on building it. I just figured that out right now," he said to laughs from the crowd.
Trump said either the wall is being funded or "we're closing down government."
"We need border security," he told the audience.
Responding on "America's Newsroom," White House director of strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp said there is a "crisis on the border" and that Democrats now favor open borders and abolishing ICE.
She said in order to get something passed through the Senate to address the problem, 60 votes are required, so Democrats would have to be brought on-board.
Schlapp said Trump intends to work with Democrats, hoping they will stop their "pure obstruction" strategy to avert a government shutdown.
