New Jersey advances bill on overcrowded rental homes

Lawmakers advance bill on overcrowded rental homes
    by The Associated Press
    Friday February 15, 2008, 8:38 AM
A bill aimed at reducing overcrowding in rental homes is moving forward in the state Legislature, despite heavy criticism.

The proposed law would allow municipalities to increase fines on landlords found to be letting too many people live in the same dwelling. It would also allow fines on the residents themselves for the first time.

Opponents say the measure is unfair to the disadvantaged -- especially immigrants. They also say it would not do anything to create more affordable housing in a state that is among the most expensive places to live in the nation.

The bill won unanimous approval Thursday from the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee, sending it to the full Senate.

Great law! We have had the same problem here in Houston. Several families living in small houses or apartments. This enables these low income problems to come into a good neighborhood and rent a home. Sometimes there will be 3-5 families living in one home.

We have big companies come into new neighborhoods and buy up new homes. Their only intent is to rent the property out to anyone who will pay what they want for it. This type of crap is causing housing values to decline because these people bring their garbage, culture and problems to good neighborhoods.

    This is great news!!

I hope it passes! I'm going to send a letter. This is a would be a good step forward in reducing illegal immigration in New Jersey.

Yeah, and one of the reasons it's the most expensive is because of the 450,000 illegals living in this state!

Does anyone remember when there used to be 'maximum tenancy' laws? This law should be strictly enforced in every city and State!

Here in L.A. County there are huge syndicates of landlords who have made a bloody fortune for the past 10 years...buying up single family homes in South Central and other areas for the sole purpose of renting to illegals. The rents are exhorbitant, but the renters are making tons of money by dividing up all the rooms and charging $500 Plus per person!

In fact, many city employees (and officials) have bought up property for the expressed purpose of renting to illegals. It's a HUGE business in LA!

It's a huge business for town employees & NJ officials too. That's one of the reasons the law isn't enforced.

Another reason is that illegal alien activists have sued towns who try to enforce these laws to court. Some towns have lost.

More importantly, it enables employers to pay them far less than us citizens. If this law is passed, these workers who crowd into one house will be asking for raises.

They are not making less wages than Americans. A few are, but most refuse to work for less than $10 -$22 per hour. I can assure you of that.

They are making tax free wages, and saving on rent, and sending tax free cash to Mexico. Or saving to buy real estate and businesses in the US.

A LOT of illegals are making less than $10 an hour simply becuase their employers refuse to pay them more. Cooks, landscapers, roofers, the list goes on. Yea, some are making more than that, but I find it very very hard to believe that some are making as much as $20 an hour and, NO you cannot assure me of that. For that price, they could hire an American citizen without the hassles of hiring illegals for ANY job!
