WILLISTON, Vt. -
A North Carolina trooper was shot during a routine traffic stop, and the man accused of opening fire is no stranger to Vermont State Police!
Police say the eleven year veteran with the highway patrol, Trooper Michael Potts pulled 23 year old Mikel Brady over for not wearing a seatbelt. Almost immediately, police say shots were fired.
Miraculously, the trooper is in fair condition, but was shot four times, in the hands, shoulder and face.
Police arrested the suspect, 23 year old Mikel Brady earlier today in an apartment. Dash cam footage and information from the DMV led them to the location.
Brady's been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill.
The name Mikel Brady may be new to North Carolina, but when we looked back at our archive, he's been in and out of the news for years.
A routine traffic stop took a tragic turn. 23 year old Mikel Brady of Hancock, Vermont is accused of trying to kill a North Carolina Trooper, but Brady's criminal record doesn't start here.
"Assault and robbery, burglary, violations of conditions and grand larceny," Dale Crook said, from the Department of Corrections.
For years now, Brady has been in and out of the Vermont Judicial System.
And has been convicted of a long list of crimes... eight in three years. The most serious, a brutal home invasion in South Royalton. There, he stabbed a woman and hit her with a baseball bat.
I checked in with the courts and the Department of Corrections to find out why he isn't in jail.
"We supervise close to ten thousand people in the community, on occasion, things like this happen, it's unfortunate, but you just have to try to do our best to keep it from happening," Crook said.
Brady could have served up to ten years in prison but only did two years and four months. The DOC says he was a model inmate, completed all of his classes and appeared to be a changed man.
"We had no indications that something like this would occur," Crook said.
Just this past June, after completing the minimum time, Brady was released on furlough, but escaped from supervision in October, and up until his arrest Tuesday, has been on the run.
Police plan to keep him in North Carolina, to try him in this case.
Then Brady will be sent back to Vermont to face his escape charge.

NC man arrested in shooting death of motorcyclist
The Associated Press
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Police in Fayetteville say a man has been arrested in the shooting death of a motorcyclist, while investigators say another assault on a biker around the same time was unrelated.
Authorities say 24-year-old Francisco Echeverria was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Craig Morris. Police say Morris was shot to death early Tuesday morning after the two got into an argument in the parking lot of shopping center.
In the second assault, 30-year-old Matthew John Key said he was riding his motorcycle when he got into an argument with two people in a car. They went into a parking lot, then rode off. Key said someone in the car shot at him several times.
The car also hit Key's motorcycle, causing him to wreck.
