Marry girls when they're '15 or 16,' says 'Duck' star

    NEED TO KNOW

    • 'You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16,' Duck Dynasty patriarch says in resurfaced video
    • Phil Robertson was suspended for nine days over comments he made in GQ magazine about homosexuality

Roasted 'Duck': Phil Robertson's hairy road to fame

"Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson is ruffling feathers again, this time for comments he made years ago about how girls should marry when they're still teenagers.

"They got to where they're getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ‘til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em,"Robertson says in a video clip that resurfaced Monday. "Look, you wait ‘til they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks."

The comments come as part of an anecdote being recounted by the 67-year-old during a speaking engagement. Robertson described the story as "river rat counseling" he was giving to a "boy" of unknown age and -- referring specifically to marrying teenage girls -- also advised the crowd to "check with mom and dad about that, of course." Robertson is four years older than his wife, Kay, whom he married when she was 16 years old, according to A&E's website.

The reality show patriarch was speaking at a Georgia Sportsmen Ministry event when he recounted this advice, according to the video's description. The clip was originally posted in 2009, by YouTube user wakemakerducks, which is also the name of Robertson's company. It was posted again to YouTube on Monday.

In the newly resurfaced footage, Robertson also lists other qualities he advised the boy to look for in a future wife.

"Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road," Robertson said.

The resurfaced footage comes on the heels of controversy caused by comments regarding homosexuality that Robertson made to GQ magazine earlier in December.

“It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man’s anus," Robertson told GQ when opening up about topics he said he couldn't discuss on the show. "That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

Robertson went on to explain to the magazine how he thinks the line between right and wrong has been blurred and that "sin becomes fine."

He then expanded on what, in his opinion, is "sinful."

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there," Robertson said. "Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men."

A&E quickly suspended Robertson from filming future episodes of the hit show after he made those comments. Nine days later, the network reversed its decision.

HLN has reached out to the "Duck Dynasty" family for comment but has yet to hear back.

"[Robertson] also advised the crowd to "check with mom and dad about that, of course.""

Please note that Robertson advised them to check with the woman's parents before marrying her.

The liberal holier-than-thous attacking Robertson apparently don't realize that 16-year olds can marry in virtually all 50 states with parental/guardian consent.

Not surprisingly, I've never heard any liberals criticize gay rights groups that openly advocate for reducing the age of legal sexual consent to ages as young as EIGHT. With NO parental consent required, of course.

    Liberal hypocrisy absolutely reeks.

In our society right now, early marriage can leave a woman poorly prepared to step into the role of breadwinner if something happens. It was different for earlier generations. I can remember separate help wanted sections for men and women (this was legal until sometime in the 1970s). Back then there weren't many professional options for women, so she might as well stay home. Such jobs as there were did not require college or even high school for the most part. But nowadays, the prices of everything, such as housing and fuel, are paced along with salaries and someone who cannot command a middle class salary is going to be hurting if death or divorce of the breadwinner occurs. Picking ducks may be great for the Robertson family, but only so-so on a resume. Maybe that ought to be different, but that's just the way things are now. Of course, education and experience may not be any sure thing either. We have a massive problem with unemployment and under-employment now, and many of the people who have been caught out in the employment game of musical chairs have done nothing to deserve their predicament.

When Muslims and Mormons (Remember Warren Jeffs?) want to marry young girls it's wrong.

It may be legal to marry a 15 year old, but it's still wrong.

(If the couple is 1 or 2 years apart in age it might be O.K.
but each year difference beyond that makes it more and more creepy.) IMO

I wonder if part of the reason for him saying this is that it's so hard for young ladies to remain chaste until marriage these days?

I used to think that it was ridiculous and stupid for any girl to marry under 19/20. But I thought it should be illegal for any girl under 18 to marry for sure. However as these days I'm far more educated internationally and have met and known women in many other countries I can't say that anymore. In many countries women mature very fast often maturing at 15/16ish as mature as an average American girl is at 20-21 these days. This is often due to having harder lives were everything isn't handed to them, responsibilities to help raise the family and younger siblings, working a bit younger supporting their studies and younger siblings.

So with that I see it as if your expecting a woman to be matured in some countries that can be 15/16, in the US that should be 21+. Of course if we talk guys that should be significantly higher. In some countries like the Philippines if a woman is under 25 she needs parental consent (bit high imo but 21 makes sense).

In the 60's, in farming communities, early marriages were not uncommon. Phil is 65 and the time frame is about on par for the time.
I went to High School for a while in a small town in the Texas Panhandle and there were a large number of of girls that married very young.
