    This report is being updated.

Multiple victims were shot early Sunday at an Orlando, Fla., gay club. The gunman who was inside the club is dead.

A few minutes later, an Orlando Sentinel reporter said she heard an explosion from the club — but almost immediately police said the sound was a deliberate, controlled detonation by authorities.
Initial witness accounts suggested that at least seven people had been shot at Pulse, which describes itself as Orlando’s premier gay nightclub. June is Gay Pride Month. A WESH-TV reporter has said the assailant may have shot 20 or more people.

Witnesses described a bloody scene in and around the club, with dozens of shots fired.

The violence reportedly erupted about 1 a.m. Dallas time, and dozens of emergency vehicles responded. Officers armed with assault rifles cordoned off numerous blocks around the club.

WESH reporter Stewart Moore said he’d seen at least seven emergency vehicles carrying victims. The New York Daily News quoted a witness who said medical personnel were loading several victims into one ambulance while more wounded people were lying in a parking lot near the club. Another witness said the injured were also being loaded into the backs of pickup trucks.

Police confirmed that there had been mass casualties, and they described the situation as a “fluid scene.” Local authorities were seeking assistance from state and federal law enforcement.

An Orlando newspaper reporter said the gunman inside the club also may have been armed with a bomb. There also were reports that there may have been a second shooter outside the club.

The Orlando Sentinel said a police bomb squad and hazardous material team responded to the emergency. A crisis negotiator also was summoned. Reporter Christal Hayes said authorities seemed to be searching for someone in the area.

One person who said online that he had been at the club when the shooting began reported that he managed to escape because he was near an exit. Other people who were dancing or at the bar tried to take cover by dropping to the floor.

Although the club was preparing to close, more than a hundred people were estimated to still be inside.

One witness told the Orlando Sentinel that the shooting lasted “the duration of an entire song.”

Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club’s rooms when the gunman came into the front of the room.

“I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,” he said. “The music stopped.”

Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: “He’s coming.”

“The next text said: ‘He has us, and he’s in here with us,’” she said. “That was the last conversation.”

Video of emergency crews helping victims was posted on social media as other victims were being carried or were walking to nearby Orlando Regional Medical Center. But the hospital’s staff had not commented publicly on how many people had been wounded.

Soon after police reported that the gunman had been found dead, the club posted online: “As soon as we have any information we will update everyone. Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    More details to come.

Omar Mateen has been identified as the Pulse nightclub gunman who killed 20 people during a rampage Sunday morning, CBS reported.
Mateen, 27, was a U.S. citizen from Port St. Lucie, Fla., the network added.

He was killed after a showdown with police inside the nightclub. Authorities are investigating whether he had ties to Islamic extremists, CBS said.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks says the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
He says authorities are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina says the shooter was armed with an assault-type rifle, a handgun and some type of suspicious device.

Orlando Shooting Suspect Identified As Omar Mateen, Registered Democrat Of Afghan Descent With Firearm License
    by Tyler Durden - Jun 12, 2016 9:43 AM

The suspected gunman in today's gruesome Orlando nightclub shooting which killed "approximately 20 people" has been identified by relatives and law enforcement officials as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce, Florida, CBS reports. According to social media, he is a US citizen, born in 1986, from Port Saint Lucie, FL. and both his parents are from Afghanistan. He was a registered democrat with a security officer and firearms license. The Orlando Mayor says he used an assault rifle, while Florida Congressman Alan Grayson adds that he believes the attack is "more likely than not" ideologically motivated.

CBS added that the FBI is currently checking if he was linked to extremists.
According to BBC, Mateen was not on any terrorism watch list, although as CBS also adds Islamic terrorism is being investigated as one of the possible motives behind the mass shooting.
CNN adds that the suspected Orlando gunman was trained in use of weapons.

Orlando nightclub shooting: 50 killed in ‘domestic terror incident’ at gay club; gunman identified
By Mark Berman, Adam Goldman and Peter Holley
    June 12 at 10:56 AM

Police, FBI give details on Orlando nightclub shooting that killed approximately 20 - VIDEO AT LINK

Gunfire erupted at Pulse nightclub in Orlando early on Sunday, June 12, killing about 20 people and injuring about 42 others, according to police. Orange County sheriff Jerry Demings says the event can be classified as a "domestic terror incident." (Reuters)

A gunman opened fire inside a crowded gay nightclub in Orlando, killing 50 people and injuring dozens more in a rampage that was the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history.

Authorities in Orlando said Sunday that the siege at Pulse, a popular gay bar and dance club, was quickly deemed an act of domestic terrorism. In addition to the 50 people killed, another 53 were injured, officials said.

Police had said earlier Sunday that 20 people were killed before saying that the toll was significantly higher. Until Sunday, the 2007 rampage at Virginia Tech — which saw 32 people killed and 30 others injured — was the country’s worst mass shooting.

The gunman was killed by police officers in a shootout after the rampage, authorities said. It was not immediately clear if the death toll included the gunman.
While police have not officially identified the gunman, law enforcement officials and relatives on Sunday identified him as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce, Fla.

“We’re dealing with something we never imagined and is unimaginable,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said during a news briefing Sunday. Dyer said he had issued a state of emergency in the city and asked the governor to issue a similar order for the state.

Police have not identified a possible motive, and details about Mateen’s background were scarce on Sunday morning. His family is from Afghanistan, while Mateen is believed to have been born in the United States.

One relative said that Mateen’s family was in shock after being told on Sunday morning about his involvement. This relative said Mateen’s family was very sorry about what had happened.

“It appears he was organized and well-prepared,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a news conference earlier Sunday.

At least 42 people were transported to various hospitals, Mina said, adding that one officer was wounded.

“This is an incident … that we certainly classify as a domestic terror incident,” Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said at the news conference. The FBI is involved in the investigation, authorities said.

“We had a crime that will have a lasting effect on our community,” Dyer said. “We need to stand strong, we need to be supportive of the victims and their families.”

Officials said Sunday they found “an assault-type rifle and a handgun” at the scene. In addition, a law enforcement official said Mateen was previously known to authorities, but said he was not under investigation.

The White House said President Obama was briefed on the incident Sunday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims,” the White House said in a statement. “The President asked to receive regular updates as the FBI, and other federal officials, work with the Orlando Police to gather more information, and directed that the federal government provide any assistance necessary to pursue the investigation and support the community.”

Police said that during the shootout with the gunman, one Orlando police officer was shot and saved by his Kevlar helmet.

The horrific incident began as Saturday gave way to Sunday at the crowded club. Around 2 a.m., Pulse Orlando posted an urgent message on Facebook: “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.”

Within minutes of the shooting, police vehicles and a SWAT team descended on the club, which had more than 300 people inside as the shooting began.
“I was there,” Ricardo J. Negron posted on the club’s Facebook page several hours later. “Shooter opened fire @ around 2:00am. People on the dance floor and bar got down on the floor and some of us who were near the bar and back exit managed to go out through the outdoor area and just ran. I am safely home and hoping everyone gets home safely as well.”

An officer working at the club exchanged fire with the gunman, authorities said. It was then, according to police, that the incident developed into “a hostage situation.”

Authorities said the man was armed with an “suspicious device,” in addition to his guns, Mina, the police chief, told reporters.
About three hours after the initial reports of gunfire, the SWAT team launched a rescue operation and killed the gunman, authorities said.

“The decision was made to rescue hostages that were in there,” Mina said.

Police later reported that a sound heard at the club was a “controlled explosion.”
Jon Alamo told the Associated Press that he was near the back of the club when the gunman appeared near the front of the building.
“I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,” Alamo said. “The music stopped.”

Another statement from a person who was at the club when the shots began
    5:54 AM - 12 Jun 2016

Rob Rick said the violence erupted as the night was winding down.

“Everybody was drinking their last sip,” he said.

Rick told the AP that he estimated more than 100 people were still inside when the shooting began. He hit the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth, he said. Some people managed to escape out of the back of the club after a bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and a restricted area leading to an exit, he noted.

Mina Justice told the AP that her son, Eddie, texted her when the rampage began and asked her to call police.

    From the AP:

He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide.He then texted her: “He’s coming.”“The next text said: ‘He has us, and he’s in here with us,'” she said. “That was the last conversation.”

The early-Sunday rampage followed the fatal shooting Friday night of a pop singer who was killed while signing autographs following a performance at an Orlando concert venue. Christina Grimmie, a 22-year-old singer who was a finalist on NBC’s show “The Voice,” died hours after being shot by a gunman who then shot himself, police said.

So will the call be for no Muslims or no guns? I know this is going to set something in motion.

The shooter is everything the liberals were hoping he wouldn't be. He's the son of immigrant parents, registered Democrat, and a Muslim. When the new first broke, I'm sure the Obama administration and most other Democrats wanted him to be a crazy white boy from Alabama with an up to date NRA membership card in his wallet.

Someone just reported on one of the networks, I think it was Fox News, that the Club checked for guns until around 2 am and then they stop because at that time of day it's mostly people leaving, so the shooter has entered unfettered at that time and again was the only guy in the room with a gun.
