Mayor Bill White Uses Tax Dollars to Fight Border Security Bill




Liberal Democrat Bill White sent lobbyists (paid for by your tax dollars) to argue against a border security bill. [HB 13 deals with homeland security issues, including border security.] Mayor White opposed the border security bill, arguing that the City of Houston cannot comply with provisions prohibiting a city from creating any "rule, policy or ordinance" that does not fully enforce federal drug and immigration laws. Essentially, the Mayor takes the position that Houston cannot follow federal drug and immigration laws.



Bill White and other liberal Democrats were able to derail this critical bill for the time being. House Republican Caucus Chairman Rep. Frank Corte (R-San Antonio) said, “There can be no doubt: this bill was killed for political reasons by members who have personal opposition to the governor and are opposed to ending the practice of so-called sanctuary cities.â€
