Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan says he won't run for US Senate in 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Veteran Ohio congressman Tim Ryan says he isn't running for the 2016 Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Rob Portman.

Ryan in a statement cites his "new and growing" family for his decision. Ryan was married in 2013, and his wife gave birth to a son last year. He also has two stepchildren.

Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld is seeking the Democratic nomination, while former Gov. Ted Strickland is considering it.

Strickland is a former congressman and says he will announce his decision by the end of this month.

Portman is a former congressman and White House budget chief who is seeking a second Senate term.

The swing-state race could be important to GOP hopes of holding its Senate majority in the presidential election year.
