Melania Trump: 'I followed the law' as immigrant

By NICK GASS 02/24/16 09:18 AM EST

Melania Trump is defending her husband's campaign, particularly his outspoken rhetoric on immigration and what critics have perceived as a harsh tone directed toward women.

“I followed the law," Trump said in an interview with Mika Brzezinski aired Wednesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," in discussing the hoops she had to jump through in order to become a citizen of the United States. "I never thought to stay here without papers. I had a visa, I traveled every few months back to the country to Slovenia to stamp the visa. I came back, I applied for the green card, I applied for the citizenship later on after many years of green card. So I went by system, I went by the law. And you should do that, you should not just say let me stay here and whatever happens, happens.”

Trump, who immigrated to the United States from Slovenia in 1996, said that she and her husband are "prepared" for people to call him names for expressing his viewpoints. "I’m a full-time mom, and I love it. So, I decided not to be in the campaign so much, but I support my husband 100 percent," she said of her role in the campaign itself.

"We have thick skin, and we know that people will judge him and people will call names. They don’t give him enough credit. From June that he announced, they don’t give him enough credit," she said, leading Brzezinski to ask her what she thought about people who felt he insulted Mexicans with his comments that the country is sending rapists and murderers across the border in his announcement speech.

Trump said that she did not feel her husband insulted the Mexican people. “He said illegal immigrants. He didn’t talk about everybody. He talked about illegal immigrants," she explained. "And after a few weeks, like two weeks [of] giving him a hard time and bashing him in the media, they turned around. They said, ‘you know what, he’s right. He’s right what he’s talking about.’ And he opened conversation that nobody did.”

Asked to respond to criticism that her husband has treated women harshly or unfairly targeted them while as a candidate, alluding to his rhetorical attacks on Fox News' Megyn Kelly and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump said that her husband treats both sexes as equals in the Trump Organization.

“They’re treated equal. I see him in life, he treats women the same as men. He will tell you what is in his heart, what he thinks. He will not hold it back if you’re a woman, you’re human. If you’re a woman or a man, it’s no different, you’re human."

She and her husband do not always see eye to eye on everything, Trump suggested at another point, when the real-estate mogul's use of profanity came up in the conversation.

“Well, do I agree all the time with him? No, I don’t. And I tell him that. I tell him my opinions. I tell him what I think," she said, adding that "sometimes he listens," and sometimes he does not.

I have questions for Melania Trump. We know her father was or is a card carrying Communist. We know her father is an Atheist. i would like to know if she did or does consider herself as a Communist. I would like to know if she is an Atheist. These are questions that I believe will come out in the National Campaign.

PALEEZE - let us not be picayunish. Would you rather cruz be the nominee and lose to a democrat??
Count your blessings that Mr Trump has engaged himself in this journey.

She is 46yrs old, her father (whatever his beliefs are or were considering the times) has nothing to do with her beliefs. She has stated she would be a traditional 1st lady aka Jackie Kennedy & Betty Ford. Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia - the cold war is over. She was a high fashion model & is contributory to many charitable events. And she became a citizen LEGALLY.

Plus Reuters can't confirm this rumor that her father was a communist. They tried and failed. Her father was a salesman for a car dealership, then was promoted manager, and after the country's independence, he owned his own company, so he sure doesn't sound like a Communist. Her mother was a fashion designer, a business, and Melania studied architecture and then became a model with a agency, so none of them sound like Communists. I haven't read anything about her parents religion or lack thereof. But if she wants to be a traditional First Lady like Jackie Kennedy and Betty Ford, those are two very excellent First Ladies with excellent examples to follow. Personally, I would like to see the First Ladies spend more time in the White House with all the tours and people coming in, planning and hosting more wonderful events for Americans to enjoy and benefit from, and less time traveling the world at our expense.

I am glad everyone has made up their mind, but until I place my vote I am still going to continue to ask questions.

I'm with you. If Cruz and Trump both have skin in the game when the primaries reach NC, I'm not sure who I'll vote for. Trump has me on trade, Cruz has me on social issues, and they're are both fairly even on immigration and border security (couldn't' squeeze a gnats butt between their differences). The problem I have with Trump that keeps Cruz in the game is his comments regarding an expedited return of the good illegals, a merit-based system that would allow some illegals to remain, and his comment about illegals needing a path. Those are amnesty comments and he has yet to walk them back! Cruz has come out and publicly stated that no deported illegal will return on his watch and he's proposed nothing that could even be remotely tied to amnesty.

For some like you and I, MontereySherry, our decision may not come until we're standing in line to vote and we shouldn't allow anyone to tell us there is anything wrong with that.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. You take all the time you need. If Sherry is in Calfornia, she has until June to decide.

I've heard more reliable rumors that Cruz's father was a Marxist. Rubio's father was not a political refugee from Cuba, what about him?

ActuallyCruz was not a political refugee from Cuba, he was an illegal alien from Cuba who bribed a Batista official for a student visa to attend the University of Texas long before we had a political refugee program from Cuba, even before Castro took over Cuba. Cruz's father roamed our country then Canada then back to the US for decades without ever becoming a US citizen. I'm not sure how this happens for a Cuban who chose to become a Canadian citizen in the 1970's during the Vietnam War.

According to Cruz, as a teenager, he "didn't know Castro was a Communist".[12][13][14] Cruz has stated in interviews that he fled Cuba at age 18 in 1957, after an attorney for the family bribed a Batista official to grant him an exit permit.[1][15][2] Cruz said he left with $100 sewn into his underwear before the Battle of Santa Clara, in which the revolution toppled Batista on January 1, 1959.
Cruz's father left Cuba 2 years before the revolution toppled Batista.

After Cruz graduated from the University of Texas in 1961, he was granted political asylum in the United States following the expiration of his student visa.[1] He became a Canadian citizen during his residence in Canada, returning to the United States with his family in the mid-'70s. Eleanor and Rafael Cruz divorced in 1997.[33] He renounced his Canadian citizenship and in 2005 became a naturalized U.S. citizen.[1][36]

What takes someone from 1957 to 2005 to decide to become a US citizen? Were we too capitalist? Were we too free? Were we too tolerant? Were we too militaristic? What was the problem? Did he always want passports to other countries keeping one foot out of the door? Maybe 2 citizenships, Cuba and Canada?

Ted Cruz was raised by a father who took 48 years to decide to become a citizen of the United States, a nation that gave him a great education at the University of Texas, a nation that gave him a great job in the oil industry, a nation that gave him asylum after-the-fact, converting a student visa that derived from a fraud and a bribe into political asylum.

My opinion, the Cruz family has one interest, their own.
