German Chancellor Angela Merkel confronted Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg on how his company is progressing in efforts to curtail racist posts, after her government complained the social network wasn’t doing enough to crack down on recent xenophobic outbursts.
Attending a luncheon on the sidelines of a United Nations development summit in New York on Saturday, Merkel and Zuckerberg were overheard on a live transmission broadcast on the UN website as participants took their seats.
After Merkel briefly queried Zuckerberg about the hate-post affair, the Facebook CEO is heard responding that “we need to do some work” on the issue.
“Are you working on this?” Merkel asked in English. “Yeah,” Zuckerberg responded, before the dialog was cut off by introductory remarks to those present.
Earlier this month, Facebook said it would step up efforts to target racist content on its German website. The company said Sept. 14 it would join forces with a German Internet watchdog, a non-profit group called Voluntary Self-Monitoring of Multimedia Service Providers, to monitor suspected hate postings.
German authorities have been grappling with the country’s biggest refugee crisis since World War II, with as many as 1 million seeking refuge from war and poverty expected to enter the country this year. Even as many have rushed to welcome the newcomers, the surge has also spurred a spate of attacks on refugee centers and anti-foreigner sentiment.
“We are committed to working closely with the German government on this important issue,” Debbie Frost, a spokeswoman for Menlo Park, California-based Facebook, said via e-mail. “We think the best solutions to dealing with people who make racist and xenophobic comments can be found when service providers, government and civil society all work together to address this common challenge.”

So Germans aren't going to be allowed to express their frustration with the "refugees" on Facebook? Really??!!

A "civil" society would never put their own citizens in this position to begin with, Ms. Merkel.

Whenever and wherever possible, government will always act within its allotted powers to control public conversation it considers detrimental to its influence over said public. As the popularity of the internet continues to grow, more issues of censorship are likely to happen in the future. Right now Merkel is attempting to verbally pressure Zuckerberg and it's obviously working. However, if her tactic of verbal pressure failed to get results, she would probably resort to a legal remedy. Laws concerning free speech are stricter in Germany then they are here in the United States.

So we see the evil at work, don't we. The German government is going to shove Muslims down the throats of Germans and they better not complain. Europe is gone, sick to its soul with Marxism. They never really had free speech in Europe here is just another example. We all know the European definition of "hate speech " is: anybody who complains about their country being swamped by Muslims. Canada has the same definition. And never ever complain about Muslim rapes of native European women.

The European governments are going to put Muslims in Europe and the native Europeans better shut up while they are made aliens in their own country, by their own government. SICK!

Patriots if you have family or friends in Germany e-mail them tell them to fight this evil government policy if they want to have a homeland to call their own. We all know what many Muslims do to "infidel" women. Think of your daughters and sisters and wives. Do not passively let this happen.

We see from Facebook management that "xenophobic" is put together with "hate speech." Xenophobic is of course what the open borders lobby calls us constantly. How long before our government follows the Europeans and US patriots will be silenced, by force if necessary. If we don't end the illegal alien invasion we will loose the right to speak out against it soon. We already have hate crimes laws, it is just a matter of making their definition broader and enforcement more aggressive to shut down freedom of speech here in the US. including putting people in jail if necessary. They do that now in Canada and places in Europe. Look at what just happened in France to some woman politician. She is battling for her freedom for speaking against the Muslims taking over her country. In the USA there are a lot of hard core leftists who have been appointed as judges. They would love to bend the "hate crimes" laws to silence us.

Patriots we see the despotism racing upon us. This is no longer a political contest, it is a battle for freedom against tyranny. This is no longer about immigration; it is about a stealthy plan of repression and the dismemberment of 2000 years of Western civilization. This is the face of fanaticism when it gets political power. And the fanatics are Marxists who hate the Western culture and the people who make that culture. This is our darkest nightmare unfolding. It is evil being done by fanatics some who think they are doing good, and others who know better. It is a quiet self-imposed genocide of an entire people, Western people, because a people are the culture and Marxist fanatics crave absolute power and to get that power they must gut Western civilization and its people.

This is no longer politics as usual; this is our hill to die on, or they literally will be taking us away in box cars to sensitivity training camps in the not too distant future.

csarbww, I completely agree. This really is a total outrage by Merkel. She should spend her lunch time with Volkswagen executives and explain the issues of fraud, deceptive trade practices, and deliberate violations of emissions standards. Germany wants to brag about their solar panels while polluting our environment with rigged emission equipment puffing out 40 x the legal limit in nitrogen oxide.
