An investigation by a major Mexican newspaper, El Universal has concluded that the United States DEA did work with the Sinaloa Drug Cartel from 2000 to 2012. In exchange for information on rival cartels, the DEA allowed Sinaloa to smuggle billions of dollars worth of drugs into the country each year.
The investigation appears to give legitimacy to claims made by Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, the Sinaloa cartel’s “logistics coordinator” and son of cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. Zambada-Niebla claims that Fast and Furious wasn’t about guns but was actually a way for Obama to fund and arm Sinaloa in exchange for information used to take down rival gangs.
DEA agent Manuel Castanon testified in a Chicago court that he had a meeting with Zambada-Niebla and two other people — DEA agent David Herrod and a cooperating source [Sinaloa lawyer Loya Castro] in a hotel room that lasted for about 30 minutes.
“I did all of the talking on behalf of [the] DEA,” Castanon testified. Zambada-Niebla was arrested just hours later by the Mexican Marines and was visited by Castanon and three other DEA agents, where he once again pledged to cooperate.
Using court documents, El Universal was able to verify at least 50 meetings between the DEA and the cartel and also confirmed that several large busts occurred because of that information, including a drug bust of 23 tons of drugs.
“The DEA agents met with members of the cartel in Mexico to obtain information about their rivals and simultaneously built a network of informants who sign drug cooperation agreements, subject to results, to enable them to obtain future benefits, including cancellation of charges in the U.S..”
In 2010, Zambada-Niebla was extradited to Chicago. His lawyers argued that he had a deal with the current administration not to prosecute. It was reiterated during the hearing that Fast and Furious was used to fund and arm the Sinaloa drug cartel.
The DEA refused to comme3nt on the charges made by Zambada-Niebla and his lawyers.
