From Mexico's Finest City, the joys of dual citizenship

(Dual citizen, US-Mexican) Man In Custody After High-Speed Chase To Border

SAN DIEGO -- A man in a pickup truck registered to a sex offender led police and California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase through San Diego to Mexico, where he was able to cross the border, according to law-enforcement officials.

San Diego police said a witness called at 12:41 p.m. to report they had seen a man driving around and exposing himself in North Park in the 3500 block of Indiana Avenue.

Police said they spotted a white Chevy S-10 pickup truck in the 4000 block of Texas Street and attempted to pull over the vehicle.

According to officials, the driver refused to yield and led police on surface streets to Interstate 5, where the chase reached speeds of up to 90 mph. The CHP took over the pursuit on I-5 south and attempted to stop the truck with a spike strip near the exit to Coronado Avenue, but the driver swerved around it and managed to elude capture. According to the San Diego police, the driver swerved toward a CHP officer at one point during the chase and attempted to run him over.

The chase came to an end when the driver, who was fully clothed, neared the San Ysidro border crossing and jumped out of the truck and ran across the border, where he was taken into custody by Mexican officials.

Authorities in Mexico told NBC 7/39 the driver has dual citizenship and that they are awaiting the arrival of officials from the American Consulate to discuss the incident.

Man Leads Officers On Wild Chase

    POSTED: 1:15 pm PST November 9, 2005
    UPDATED: 5:03 pm PST November 9, 2005

SAN DIEGO -- The U.S. and Mexican governments are trying to figure out what to do with a man who led San Diego police on a wild chase Wednesday afternoon, 10News reported.

The high speed pursuit began in the North Park area and ended at the San Ysidro port of entry.

The man was driving a truck belonging to a registered sex offender, 10News reported.

Police say two women reported a naked man in the truck.

When officers spotted the vehicle, the chase started on southbound Interstate 5.

The driver crashed just north of the gates at the San Ysidro border crossing.

He ran into Mexico where he was arrested by Mexican customs agents.

"Based on (his) citizenship and what (the) charges are, we may get him back today, or (we) may have to go through official court procedures to get him returned," said Lt. Todd Jarvis, with the San Diego Police Department.

If the driver of the truck is returned, he'll face assault charges on a CHP officer who was almost hit by the truck during the chase, 10News reported.
