Harrison Co. GOP party chair resigns, citing inability to support Trump

HARRISON COUNTY (KLTV) -Wes Brumit, who has served as the Harrison County Republican Party chair for the past three years, has resigned, citing inability to side with his party's presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"It has been my privilege to serve the Harrison County Republican Party as county chair for the last three years," he begins. "The past year has been a difficult political year for this nation. It has been very painful to watch the GOP come apart at the seams, as the primary process pitted Republican against Republican."

He says his county is not immune to the divisiveness.

"...Harrison County was not spared from the division. Many, including those within our executive committee, have come to a different conclusion than I have. ...However, with much consideration and prayer, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot support Donald Trump as the Republican Party nominee for President," the statement continued.

He calls into question Trump's claim that he is a conservative.

"Mr. Trump has failed throughout his life to show he represents the ideas, values, and principles the the GOP is founded upon. Mr. Trump is not a conservative in any sense of the word. He has not proposed one government program that he would abolish, or even make smaller. He has espoused conflicting positions in this campaign on many issues, making it impossible to judge where he actually stands. In fact, he has said he 'could be anyone he wants,' depending on the audience."

He also points to Trump's character as a reason for his inability to back him.

"Mr. Trump's character is seriously flawed. As an elected leader within the GOP, I cannot defend his actions, words, or patterns of self-centeredness. He is an extreme narcissist and person who never feels the need to apologize, ask for forgiveness, or even repent for his behavior. In short, I fear Mr. Trump will destroy the Republican Party and its message."

He ended his statement by saying the party will only have itself to blame if Trump loses the election, calling them "complicit in the corruption that has angered so many Americans," and calling out several Texans who he feels have contributed to the issue.

"Texas’ own Toni Ann Daschle, Steve Munisteri, and Dan Patrick failed to fight for conservative views and rules that would have allowed other voices to be heard. They instead decided to side with chairman Priebus and his establishment cronies. It seems to me, that there is no room for conservatives in the current GOP leadership. If the Republican Party is ever to win a presidential race again, there needs to be some serious changes among the 168 national committeemen and women starting with the firing of Reince Priebus and whom Texas RPT delegates choose to represent them at the national level."

He ended with the following statement:

Everyone has a line that they will not cross. Sadly, I have reached that line with this election. I can no longer align myself with a party that holds Donald Trump up as an example of its values and principles. I would be doing a disservice to the party and my executive committee by continuing in this capacity, when I have no confidence or respect for the man at the top of the ticket. To be clear, I will continue to fight for conservative ideals and values, but will do so through a different venue. In this Presidential election, I will be supporting and voting for Tom Hoefling. His values, character and principles more closely exemplify my own. To borrow a phrase from President Reagan, I am not leaving the GOP, the GOP left me.

I hereby resign my position as the County Chair for Harrison County GOP.

No word on any response to the resignation by his peers in the Harrison County party.
