[Watch] Sen Sessions – Economic Data Belies Obama Recovery Claims, and His Recommendations

Posted on 8 May, 2014 by Rick Wells

In his comments to Federal Reserve Chairman Yellen, Senator Jeff Sessions points out that recent history has indicated there are quite often major differences in what the documented expectations are and the subsequent reality as it pertains to the U.S. economy.

He recalls how former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan was overly optimistic in his expectations of record surpluses, as well as his successor, Ben Bernanke, in his estimates of growth between 3.5 and 4%, when the actual number was about half of that.
He cites how in spite of adding $8.3 trillion to the debt since 2007,

    • The population has grown by 15 million but we have 500,000 fewer people working today.
    • The workforce participation rate has fallen to 63%, the lowest level in 36 years.
    • Median Household Income has fallen an average of $2,268 per household, almost $200 per month.
    • The lower income group is growing, the Middle Class is getting smaller.
    • The “stimulus mindset” in Washington has been better for the investor class and the political class, it has not been good for the working class.

Senator Sessions continues, saying that, “not only has the stimulus failed American workers, it has left us with record debt and an economy dependent upon unprecedented policies that you [Yellen] and I know cannot continue.”

Sessions says the relatively good jobs information of last month was a positive sign, but that they were in Sessions’ opinion completely offset by the dropping out of 988,000 people from the workforce. He also points out that large numbers of those who did get jobs were part-time.
The senator says the time has come to return to first principles, spend what you have, plan for the future carefully, lay out policies that are prudent and can be maintained long-term, and don’t borrow what you cannot pay back.

Sessions offers for consideration 7 ways that the economy could be improved without adding to the debt.

    • More American Energy, eliminate unnecessary regulation
    • Overhaul and Simplify the Tax Code
    • Ensure Fair Trade and Protect American Workers from Unfair Trade
    • Adopt an Immigration Policy that Serves American Workers
    • Turn the Welfare Office into a Job Training Center
    • Streamline the Government
    • Balance the Federal Budget

Sessions considers these to be concrete steps that will work and help to return our nation to prosperity.
