More voters approve of President Trump's controversial executive order on immigration than they do of nearly any other of his orders, a new poll out Wednesday found.
More than half (55%) of registered voters said they approve of the order — which bars people from seven Muslim-majority countries and all refugees from entering the U.S. — while only 38% said they disapprove, the latest Morning Consult/Politico poll found.
That would represent the highest rating found in a Morning Consult/Politico poll for any of the executive orders Trump has signed so far.
The high mark ties the 55% who said in a Morning Consult/ Politico poll that they supported Trump's executive order last month to revoke federal government funding for so-called "sanctuary cities."
Trump says U.S. won't be safe and secure without his travel ban
Other Morning Consult / Politico polls have shown that 54% of voters approve of Trump's executive order to freeze all federal government regulations (with 33% disapproving), that 49% of voters approve of the executive order to delay implementing parts of the Affordable Care Act (with 41% disapproving), and that 48% of voters approve of the executive orders to advance the Keystone XL pipeline, to freeze federal government hiring and to begin construction on the border wall.
The latest Morning Consult/Politico poll, conducted Feb. 2-4 among 2,070 registered voters, nevertheless found that Trump's approval rating had declined two percentage points from its previous week's poll, to 47%.
The latest poll found that his disapproval ratings rose five percentage points to 46%.
The poll's results about the travel ban, however, contradict the results of other recent polls.
A CNN/ORC survey out over the weekend found that 53% Americans opposed Trump's travel ban. That poll also found 55% of Americans said they interpreted the ban as a way to bar Muslims from entering the U.S.
A federal appeals court in San Francisco held a hearing Tuesday evening on the order, marking the greatest legal challenge yet to the ban. The Justice Department is seeking a stay on a Seattle judge's order that halted the travel ban, pending fuller consideration from the court on the appeal itself.
