More Voters Still Think Federal Government Encourages Illega

More Voters Still Think Federal Government Encourages Illegal Immigration
    Monday, February 07, 2011

Most voters continue to believe that the policies of the federal government encourage illegal immigration, but voters are now almost evenly divided over whether it's better to let the federal government or individual states enforce immigration laws.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters think the policies and practices of the federal government encourage illegal immigration, comparable to findings in October 2009 but down slightly from 62% last September after the Arizona immigration law had been in the headlines for several months. Twenty-one percent (21%) disagree and say the federal government does not encourage illegal immigration through its actions, but another 22% aren't sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Forty-seven percent (47%) say relying on the federal government to enforce immigration laws is a better approach than allowing individual states to act on their own to enforce them. Forty-four percent (44%) take the opposite view and say the better approach is to allow states to enforce immigration laws, but that's down 11 points from September.

Consistent with findings for several years, however, are the 68% who say gaining control of the border is more important than legalizing the status of undocumented workers who are already living in the United States. Twenty-five percent (25%) think legalizing illegal immigrants who are already here should come first.

Most voters (64%), in fact, still believe the U.S. military should be used along the Mexican border to prevent illegal immigration, down only slightly from last May when President Obama announced he was sending troops there but only to prevent Mexican drug violence from spilling over into this country.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters nationwide was conducted on February 2-3, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

A majority of voters (52%) also continue to favor a policy that would welcome all immigrants except “national security threats, criminals and those who would come here to live off our welfare system.â€

So quick rundown what this tells us:

57% Believe the US government policies support illegal immigration
47% say its Federal job to enforce 44% say states should as well.
68% say Border being secured should come first before any amnesty
64% Think the US Military should be used to secure the border.
52% favor all immigrants being welcomed as long as not national security threat, criminal, or live off our welfare. (This number is decreasing from earlier polls).

Republicans and Independants are twice as likely to think the government policies favor supporting illegal immigration.

60% of Republicans say States should have a hand in illegal immigration enforcement while 59% of dems say feds should handle it.

78% of Mainstream think border security should come first while the political class is evenly divided.

70% of mainstream think the government encourages illegal immigration while 54% of the political class disagree.

70% white, 84% other, and 36% black of likely voters say border security should come before any possibility of legalizing.

Looking at racial demographics "Other" comes ahead of black and white in every category for enforcement and the military and least for amnesty.

Any questions on the demographics happy to post from my membership.

I think each State should have a lawful right to enforce any laws that would benefit a State, if it pertains to illegal immigration or other unlawful problems affecting States.
When you aid and support criminals, you live a criminal life style yourself:

Not only each state should be allowed to join in the fight to remove illegals, Property owners especially along the border should have the right to protect and defend their property against trespassers like illegals and drug runners. Their lives are in danger and they should have the right to use whatever it takes to secure their property and protect their families.

If the "not sures" ever make the connection between illegals and unemployed Americans, they will become sure.

With a president like Obama in office its no wonder that the public thinks the Feds want to look the other way in the matter of immigration. Obama has openly pushed for the grand idea of the DREAM ACT. He has stated he wants AMNISTY granted to illegals as well as his support of muslims here and overseas even though we are in conflict with them in the Middle East. Its no wonder the public thinks our government favors illegals.

I was actually surprised at these figures:

ALL immigrants accepted as long as they are not on welfare, criminals, or national security threats?? That is a bit surprising, considering that the vast majority of Americans support E-verify. Perhaps Rasmussen should have also included "illegal immigrants who depress American wages." I'm sure Americans would not welcome that.....

And only 36% of black voters want the border secured before any posibility of legalization?? Thats strange, I always thought blacks were among the strongest opponents of illegal immigration. Perhaps most of the opposition comes from disefranchised blacks who don't vote...
Serve Bush with his letter of resignation.

    See you at the signing!!

That 52% in connection with the other questions would suggest that it refers to non illegals and those who come legally. I'm under the belief it means people don't want to turn any specific groups away as long as they are criminal, welfare babies, or threaten national securing.

Looking at other polls in the past most likely voters consider being an illegal alien a criminal offense. More then 50% believe Islam is a National Security threat, can't remember exact number. I'd take those polls along with meaning illegals are unwanted and there being many questions against Islam being welcomed.

I also found it interesting though that the black community is the bigger supporter. Thinking on it along with other polls as the black community is Obama's largest current supporter in voters that they likely have bought into the Obama brainwash of being pro illegal. Just look at the track record.
