MS13's growing threat

WASHINGTON -- This is the time of the year that school principals meet to plan for the next school year. At one meeting in suburban New York, 360 principals, out of the 480 attending, agreed that the greatest threat confronting their schools and communities was the Mara Salvatrucha street gang, better known as "MS13," and, specifically, gang recruitment in their schools.
But the same is true nationwide.

When this column first highlighted MS13 a year ago, many were skeptical of the police estimates of 3,000 active gang members in the northern Virginia suburbs. Now, a half-dozen murders, scores of cuttings and unreported beatings later, it is believed that there are 6,000 members in the region jus south of D.C.

This spring, the FBI was drawn in and established a Gang Crimes Task Force under Robert Clifford, the senior agent in charge. His first case was in Houston where a small child, strapped into a car seat, was shot to death while his father and brother ducked to avoid a MS13 executioner.

Not only have the numbers of these "gangstas" exploded but so has their organizational ability.

Initially, a MS13 clique would not exceed 20 people -- a dozen younger hangers-on as messengers and a near-full complement of young women. A lot of work is done by these women: communications, computers, begging, soliciting and cooking.

But MS13 rules won't allow girls or young women to take part in any decision-making or future planning. The male leadership - often under 23, some as young as 15 - have been taught that police and federal agents are more successful at recruiting females.

However, the punishment for informants is severe. Generally, dismemberment and a slow death. And in a recent murder trial in Virginia there was evidence of a "death escort."

The victim, a pretty 17-year-old, was suspected of giving police information. A former boy friend returned and was with her at all times -- until it was time to go fishing; he was the first to stab her.

These criminal gangs began in El Salvador during their civil war. Of the more than 1 million refugees and immigrants, many settled in Los Angeles and Northern Virginia. Seeking casual jobs, they formed gangs in the United States to protect themselves from established black and Mexican-American gangs.

Today, there are second- and third-generation MS13 members stealing, beating and killing. They were taught the intricacies of electronic communications, construction of booby traps and bombs by their fathers and older brothers who had been trained by the Cubans and learned cruelty from the Vietnamese.

In 1992, after the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, there were massive deportations of Central Americans. MS13 proliferated from San Salvador to Honduras and Guatemala, even to Nicaragua, Panama and Mexico.

Mexico, with its lengthy, uncontrolled borders, became a focal point for MS13, which quickly got into the people-smuggling business. If an illegal immigrant does not pay the MS13 tolls -- either on Mexico's railways, roads or border crossings -- they can abandon any hope of reaching the security of the United States.

Today, MS13 is showing dangerous signs of inter-clique cooperation; there are larger groups with fewer leaders who can direct them into the most profitable areas of illegal behavior. They also are moving into small rural towns where they announce their arrival with some act of brutality.

Such brutality also marks a new leader taking over direction of the clique. Wherever casual farm labor, day laborers, builders, painters or even help to clean-up a U.S. Navy base is needed, a handful of illegal Central American migrants will appear. Within a few months the blue and white colors of the MS13 are seen with their graffiti sprayed onto walls.

Extortion and criminal acts follow. Sometimes immigration officers move in and scores of gangstas are deported. But none of their home countries charge them with crimes and, within days, they are on their way back to the United States. Generally they have simple goals -- steal an American car, acquire a firearm and move up in the clique.

MS13 is nothing if not flexible in its choice of crimes: drug transportation and dealing, people-smuggling, theft, truck hijacking, extortion or mercenary work. And they can be readily hired as "hard men" in union disputes to fight for any cause, provided the price is right.

There has to be a way of controlling MS13. Legislation must be enacted against gang membership, deportation must follow and if the individual returns to the U.S. illegally, a mandatory long period of confinement in harsh climatic conditions should be imposed.

Perhaps we should follow China's example and pay a subsidy to a poor African state to house, feed and guard our criminals.

It sounds like this group is not a "gang" but an international crime organization that can morph into a terrorist organization (if it hasn't already).

I think the term "gang" has become a misnomer in many situations.

Wake Up America The MS-13 gang is so bad, I have heard people say they could be as willing and capable of doing things like organized terrorist groups.

When I first joined Alipac I read about them.

A couple of weeks later, I was in the grocery store and I saw two of them.
They are easy to recognize. Look into their eyes in order to identify them.
Their ID card is the look in their eyes and their attitude. You will know.

We must report them when we see them. Just say, " I believe there is an Ms-13 at such and such location. I've read about them and they fit the description. That's all I can tell you."

Two weeks after seeing these two, Senator Bill Nelson of Florida came out and said, "MS-13 is in Florida." He said that we cannot sit back on this.
When I read that I felt it confirmed my belief that I had actually seen two of them. It is hard to explain...you will just KNOW.

Please don't remind me that school is starting. Wake Up America. Everyday that I take my children to school I think about the school in Russia, and then our border situation. I seriously think about it every time. It's a nightmare thought I experience every weekday. This year I'm not going sit by and live through this alone. I'm going to gather the parents that I know and have a meeting. Then they can reach out to the parents they know and on and on until we need to find a larger location to hold these meetings. I cannot deal with this on my own anymore.

I know how you feel, my school is as open as the Mexican border .... anyone can come in or out without being challenged. Security just parks their cars in a single spot and dont move except for lunch and bathroom breaks. Local cops take forever to respond to calls from the school. Yet if you mention what happend in Beslian or in that israeli high school were the Arabs stormed and started stabbing students they say "why would they some to little tiny <fill in name of town>, we have nothing here they would want" ... well we do have something they want ... us, they want to kill each and everyone of us and in the case of MS-13 loot and steal everything we own and then kill us.

Be lucky, if you live down south or out west chances are your school district has its own armed police officers ... here we just have unarmed security guards who are usually retired old men with nothing more then a radio.

I think we should try to understand them. We should all embrace them, and accept their differences. They are really good-hearted people who want to be a part of The American Dream.

Did something about them today Snakeyes. Just prepared a report on MS-13 and SUR-13 for state legislators that have not been briefed before.

Once we get the info into their hands, we will move to get it in the hands of more American cops. That along with strengthened laws, like placing machetes on the concealed weapons list.

Your MS-13 buddies are heading to prison and then south or just back south.

You might be able to operate in the illegal immigrant communities, but you can forget trying to put your fear and turf on Americans.

We will not live like that. Got it? Do you understand that? Is that getting through your ghetto head?

We are already deporting your buddies in Charlotte NC and several other cities. Americans don't have to resort to crime, drugs, murder, gang rape, and all the other evil crap the gang bangers are into to be strong men and women.

That's why our nation is where everyone wants to live and the areas your gangs are in is where everyone wants to leave.

Besides, what is the average lifespan of an MS-13 or SUR-13 gangster?
