Nice attack: Police scour home of 31yo French-Tunisian national after 84 people killed

French police are searching the home of the prime suspect in a terrorist attack on Bastille Day in Nice that left 84 people dead and another 18 critically injured.

A truck barrelled down the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront, sending hundreds of terrified people fleeing and leaving bodies strewn in its wake in what has been described as the "worst catastrophe" in the French Riviera's modern history.

The driver then fired a pistol several times before being shot dead by police, authorities said.

The identity papers of a 31-year-old resident of Nice who was born in Tunisia were found inside.

Police said he was known to them as a petty criminal and his home was being searched.

"Investigations are currently under way to establish if the individual acted alone or if he had accomplices who might have fled," interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brander said.

No group has claimed responsibility.

President Francois Hollande has been meeting his National Security Advisers before travelling to Nice.

The president of the Nice region, Christian Estrosi, said the truck was loaded with weapons and grenades and the driver was firing a pistol when he was shot by police.

President Hollande said France had been hit by a terrorist attack on its national day, "the 14th of July, the symbol of freedom".

"Nice is now hit. It's all of France which is under the threat of Islamic terrorism," he said.

"In these circumstances, we must show absolute vigilance."

Several children are among the 84 victims, while another 18 people are critically injured.

Next time it might be a stolen gas truck.
Or the driver who has been making gas deliveries in the past just suddenly accelerates into the ground floor of a large building full of people.

Trucks are everywhere and no one can watch all of them.

One guy with one gun can steal one at a red light.

Bouhlel was born in Tunisia on January 3, 1985, Molins said. He had a permit to live and work in France.
