    • NEW: Authorities evacuate the area around the burning plant; seven injuries reported
    • The plant, in Geismar, was burning Thursday morning, authorities said
    • CNN affiliate WAFB said the explosion happened at the Williams Olefins plant
    • Video from WAFB showed flames and a plume of thick black smoke over part of the plant

(CNN) -- A Geismar, Louisiana, chemical plant exploded and caught fire Thursday, causing multiple injuries and forcing authorities to evacuate the area around the facility, officials told CNN.
The Iberville Office of Emergency Preparedness said it received reports of seven injuries from the plant explosion, according to CNN affiliate WAFB in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A Louisiana State Police dispatcher told CNN that authorities were evacuating the area around the plant.
Video broadcast by WAFB showed flames and a plume of thick black smoke rising over one part of the plant. At least one other plume of smoke or steam could be seen rising from another part of the plant.
The station reported that residents in St. Gabriel, a nearby community, were being asked to shelter in place as a precaution.
The plant was still burning Thursday morning, Amy Johnson of the Ascension Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Office told CNN.
WAFB identified the facility as the Williams Olefins plant, which produces approximately 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of polymer-grade propylene each year, according to the company's website.
The station, citing state police, said two state routes have been closed near the plant, which is about 30 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.

Explosion at chemical plant in Louisiana

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    • NEW: One person has died, Louisiana State Police say
    • NEW: Aside from a controlled burn, the fire at the chemical plant is out, official says
    • A state agency reports 33 injuries in Louisiana plant explosion
    • Hospitals report three people in critical condition

(CNN) -- A plume of thick smoke rose over a Louisiana chemical plant Thursday after an explosion and fire that left at least one person dead and forced authorities to ask people as far as two miles away to stay inside to avoid exposure to potentially toxic fumes.
A dramatic image provided to CNN affiliate WAFB by a plant worker who did not want to be identified showed workers running from a towering orange column of flame ripping through part of the plant.
Aside from a controlled burn at the Williams Geismar plant, the fire was out, Louisiana State Police Trooper Jaren Sandifer told CNN.
Firefighters and a hazardous materials team were evaluating the situation, Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeffrey Wiley told reporters.
"We think we have a stable situation," he said.
As Gov. Bobby Jindal traveled to the area to meet with emergency workers, authorities lifted the shelter-in-place order for nearby residents early Thursday afternoon. Four nearby chemical plans remained under a similar order, Ascension Parish spokesman Lester Kenyon told CNN.
At least one person died, Sandifer said.
A spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality earlier said 33 people had been hurt. It was unclear if the fatality was in addition to those injuries.
Three people were hospitalized in critical condition, according to information provided by hospitals who reported receiving patients from the blast -- Baton Rouge General Hospital, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Two people were in serious condition, seven were in fair condition, 11 were in good condition and four had not yet been evaluated, according to the hospitals.
While no fatalities had been reported, contractors with workers at the site were still accounting for their employees, authorities said.
About 600 people were at the plant when the explosion occurred, Sandifer told CNN.
It was unclear what caused the blast, he said.
The plant produces about 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of polymer-grade propylene each year, according to the company's website.
WAFB, citing state police, said two state routes had been closed near the plant, which is about 30 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.
The explosion in Louisiana comes two months after a deadly fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, on April 17. In that incident, 15 people died and a significant portion of the town was damaged by the explosion.
