Hungary's populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban delivered a fiery speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in which he claimed his country was being condemned for choosing not to be a "country of migrants", as he conceded that the European parliament was set to trigger the EU’s most serious sanction against his government.
Arriving late to the debate in the chamber in Strasbourg on Tuesday on the country’s courts, treatment of its Roma community and media and academic freedoms, Orban told MEPs that the parliament was “insulting” his nation.
A defiant Orban accused the “pro-migrant majority” of having “already made up their minds” to invoke the European Union Treaty’s Article 7 against Hungary, for its treatment of migrants and minorities, and the ruling party purported abuse of the law and suppression of media freedoms.
"But still I have come here today because you are not going to condemn a government but a country as well as a nation. You are going to denounce Hungary that has been a member of the family of Christian nations for a thousand years."
The Hungarian populist nationalist, who won landslide general election victory in April, was addressing the parliament before a vote on Wednesday on a report which has advised it to trigger article 7, which can ultimately lead to an EU member state losing its voting rights in the union’s institutions, according to the Guardian
Orbán stands accused of undermining the independence of its judiciary and media, waging a propaganda and legal war against the Central European University, founded by the philanthropist George Soros, and mistreating asylum seekers and refugees while limiting the functioning of non-governmental organisations who seek to aid them.
"Hungary will not accede to this blackmailing, Hungary will protect its borders, stop illegal migration and - if needed - we will stand up to you,” said Orban.
Calling the proceedings an “insult” to his nation, Orban called Hungary the “defender of Europe” and spoke of its “different view on Christianity in Europe, the role of nations and national culture.”
“These differences cannot be a reason to brand any country and be excluded from joint decisions. We would never go as far as to silence those that do not agree with us,” said the Hungarian prime minister, as the majority of the chamber sat in silence, while his mostly Euroskeptic supporters cheered.
Article 7 is applied if an EU member state presents a “systemic threat” to the bloc’s values, which Hungary was adjudged to have done in a report by Green MEP Judith Sargentini earlier this year, and could result in Budapest losing its voting representation in various European bodies, becoming a pariah state in the union.

It requires for two-thirds of MEPs to vote in favor of accepting the report on Wednesday, after European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker delivers his annual State of the Union speech.
This is considered likely, but all the other EU nations would then need to agree unanimously to punish Budapest. Such consensus has never been achieved, meaning that Article 7 has never been implemented, and is not likely this time either, although in an unexpected setback for Orban, Austria’s governing center-right party People’s Party decided to back the report. Hungary’s northern neighbor appeared to be on the verge of joining the Visegrad Group of four anti-migrant European states (which also includes Poland, Czechia and Slovakia) when Sebastian Kurz won the election last year
Hungary has vowed to veto the application of similar sanctions to Poland, under its own investigation, and at least Warsaw will likely return the favor.
“There can be no compromises on the rule of law and democracy and it is therefore important that the accusations that have been made against Hungary are cleared up,” Kurz told Austria’s national television ahead of the MEP vote.
That said, Orban retained the support of one notable Europarliament presence: Nigel Farage.

The forint and Hungarian stocks weakened on the news that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been hit by an unprecedented European Union censure for which his government now faces the threat of sanctions by fellow EU member states.
On Wednesday members of European Parliament voted on the move as a result of what EU lawmakers say is a breach of the European bloc's values and laws and eroding democratic standards, and amidst accusations Hungary is now an "autocracy". The rebuke was passed by 448 votes to 197.
Meanwhile Orban bit back ahead of the EU censure vote, saying before Parliament the planned move “insults the honor of the Hungarian nation” and was “a slap in the face”; and the controversial prime minister further cast the whole charade is an attempt to "blackmail" Hungary into bowing to EU pressures to soften its hard line stance on the migrant issue.

The rare disciplinary rebuke, which many expected, comes as Hungarian leadership has been complaining about migrants while remaining under intense pressure to accept them.
The decision puts Hungary under the same “Article 7” action as Poland, in which fellow EU states probe whether the censured and accused countries breached particular EU rules and more vaguely defined "values". Ultimately the process could result in Budapest's EU voting rights being suspended — unlikely, considering all other 27 EU nations would have to agree.
On Wednesday Hungary’s currency declined upon the news, leaving the US dollar up 0.6 per cent on the day, buying 281.2 forint, per FT. The country’s main stocks gauge also were down 0.28 percent in session lows.
Since coming into power in 2010, Orban has refused to take in asylum seekers arriving in Europe and has been seen as bullying his own courts and media into submission.
As Bloomberg reports, members of his own right Christian Democrats have increasingly split under the pressure, as momentum builds to expel anti-migrant far right influence across EU states:

Numerous members of Europe’s Christian Democratic faction, which includes the Fidesz party of Orban, abandoned him in the roll-call vote that became a litmus test with EU Parliament elections looming next May. That expanded support for the move against Hungary from Socialists, Liberals, Greens and the post-communist left.
...Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the Liberals in the chamber, said Orban was bent on wrecking the EU in tandem with the likes of populist Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and the goal of the proposal against Hungary was to “stop this nightmare.”
The split within the assembly’s Christian Democrats casts doubt about Fidesz’s future in the group and raises the prospect of new European alliances as French President Emmanuel Macron urges pro-EU forces to unite against nationalists, who gained ground most recently in Swedish elections on Sunday.

Meanwhile the prospect of actual sanctions and suspension of voting rights for Hungary remains slim in terms of the high procedural hurdle that must result, which would effectively make Hungary a pariah state in the union.

If there is one thing people with power always do when confronted with intransigence it is they always go nuclear.
As a parent we’ve all been there. That moment when your child calls your bluff on a particular thing you’ve been arguing over and you’re left with no other option than to go through with some terrible threat or back down.

Backing down is usually the right call, but the right course of action was to never get to that situation in the first place.
Because when you do go nuclear the damage from that is invariably far worse than whatever it was you were fighting about in the first place. Because the nuclear option creates scars. It builds layers of distrust which cannot be smoothed over with an apology later.

Well, now the EU has invoked their version of nuclear option against Hungary for refusing to accept migrants as part of the Soros/Merkel plan to import chaos and unrest into all corners of the European Union.



Hungarian President Viktor Orban has steadfastly refused to budge one inch on this issue. He has politically gone after George Soros directly by passing a strong anti-NGO law that takes its structure from a similar one passed in Russia championed by President Vladimir Putin.

Orban’s refusal to accept one migrant is where the rubber of national sovereignty meets the road of globalism. Orban knows exactly what he is doing. And he knows the consequences of this course of action.
The EU’s response is a symptom of a much deeper problem that persists due to its fundamentally anti-democratic structure. With the veneer of democracy here, calling for a vote to ratify a biased report on Hungary’s human rights abuses, 487 MEPs voted to pursue stripping Hungary of its voting rights within the EU, which is what the ultimate result of an Article 7 invocation would entail.
But the catalyst for this series of events lies with the unilateral decision of German Chancellor Angela Merkel who let in millions of migrants without the consent of other EU members, knowing she had the backing of a majority of the EU parliament should anyone balk.

In other words, this nuclear option was always in the cards. From the moment men like Orban stood up and said no to this, the spectre of Article 7 was floated in the press. So, make no mistake, this action was always the plan.
The problem for the technocrats in the EU, as they are finding out with Brexit negotiations and the Catalonian Independence movement, is that people want their countries back.

Wealth Transfer Follies

They never signed up for this insane bureaucracy and legalese weaseling. Nor did they sign up for hollowing out their core economies through wealth transfer payments via the euro.
Men like Matteo Salvini of Italy and Viktor Orban understand that Germany uses the mis-priced euro (which cannot be properly priced) to roll wealth up to it and then complain about internal EU wealth transfer payments as a way to shame countries like Poland and Hungary into accepting any edict from it.
This is why Salvini is calling for a League of Leagues, along with Orban, to wrest control of the European Parliament from globalist financiers and oligarchs through whom politicians like Merkel speak.
And when they still say no then Merkel, Juncker and the rest of the vile, European media play up on this idea that these countries want to “Have their cake and eat it too.”
I can tell you how many times I’ve heard this from Europeans who who oppose Orban’s stance on immigration. But, that is exactly the intended effect, dividing people over money expropriated at gunpoint and then used as political weapons.
That argument neatly sidesteps the reality that both systems are wrong. The wealth transfer payments are wrong and so are the unilateral edicts of a German Chancellor with a sub-30% approval rating at home; making policy for an entire continent.

The whole thing is Kafka-esque in its absurdity.
And that was entirely the point.

Nuclear Meltdown

But, at the same time, it is also why this whole Article 7 nuclear option will become a nightmare for Merkel, Juncker and the rest of the sniveling, virtue-signaling backstabbers on Soros’ payroll in the European Parliament, all 226 of them.
Because Orban and Salvini are the future of Europe, not French poodle Emmanuel Macron or Angela Merkel, whose power animal is the cockroach.

They know who their enemies are. They are naming names and playing for keeps. And both men know that they will have to continue saying, “No!” to everything put in front of them which would compromise their national sovereignty.
In fact, going nuclear will give Orban, Salvini and Polish President Andrzej Duda all the ammunition they need to go back to their people and cry victim and inflame Italian, Hungarian and Polish nationalist sentiment even further.
It will make Salvini and his partner in populism Luigi Di Maio’s job even easier to hold the line on Italy’s budget and tax reforms.

Meanwhile in Germany, people call Merkel a traitor at public appearances and Alternative for Germany rises in the polls while Merkel’s support sinks.
Beginning the Article 7 process against Hungary is a check that the feckless leftist MEP’s can’t cash. Orban et.al. will come out of this stronger because you can’t publicly shame men who stand for something a majority of people across the Western world values, their sense of place.
It will give them the ammunition they need at home and the opportunity to lead by example and reveal all of these threats as nothing more than bluffs. Because what’s next? Kicking Hungary out of the EU? Poland? Italy?
That plays directly into their hands. Why do you think Orban never entered Hungary into the euro-zone? Why do you think Salvini wants out of it?

This rebuke is like a parent saying, “Not while you live under my roof….!”
And the child walks out the door on their 18th birthday and rarely calls.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban provoked a seething response from his fellow European Union members when he decided to close Hungary's borders and passed legislation to ban foreign influence peddling funded by billionaire financier George Soros. And earlier this month, the European Parliament voted to trigger Article 7 proceedings against Hungary for "undermining democratic values and the rule of law." Indeed, because he's steadfastly refused to accept migrants in according with the policies of unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, Orban has been labeled a tyrant, despite Orban's Fidesz Party securing a majority in the country's most recent Parliamentary elections.
Despite the "extreme bullying" to which Orban has been subjected by his European colleagues, he traveled to Brussels earlier this month to face his accusers ahead of the European Parliament vote. After Orban delivered his address to the room, MEP Nigel Farage, who famously helped orchestrate the UK's vote to leave the EU back in 2016, stepped up to say a few words in Orban's defense.

"Thank God there's at least one European leader who is willing to stand up for his principles, his nation, his culture and his people in the face of such extreme bullying."

Farage argued that the vote conjured memories of Soviet-era show trials, and likened the EU Parliament to a bunch of unelected bureaucrats hypocritically lecturing Orban - whose party holds an outright majority - about democratic principles. Specifically, Farage targeted Frans Timmermans, the unelected Dutch diplomat serving as first Vice President of the European Commission. Timmermans and the rest of the Commission backed the EU Parliament in condemning Hungary for allegedly mistreating migrants and Roma communities, arguing that "democracy and the rule of law cannot exist without the protection of fundamental human rights."

"All I can say, and I'm sure for Hungarians of a certain age, today will have brought back many dark memories. You're here at a show trial where a bunch of political nonentities get up and point the finger and scream enjoying themselves with their afternoon hate, and the chief prosecutor, the commissar that comes from the unelected government, he has the audacity he has the audacity to lecture you on democracy. You don't know what you're talking about."

Farage then compared Article 7 to an updated version of the Brezhnev Doctrine - the Cold War-era policy of overweening Soviet influence that led to the USSR's brutal repression of the Hungarian Spring uprising.

"What is really happening here, Mr. Orban, is they're just updating the Brezhnev Doctrine of limited sovereignty there's no point pretending in this union you're independent there's no point pretending you've run your own country. An Article 7 is the new method of adopting that. They want to strip you of your voting rights. They want to stop giving you European funding and all of it because you have the audacity to stand up to George Soros, the man who was poured $15 billion all over the world in trying to break down the nation-states to get rid of our traditional forms of democracy."

The authorization of Article 7 proceedings isn't just an insult to Hungary - it is a direct insult to Orban personally, Farage said. He then suggested that Hungary follow in the UK's footsteps and abandon the Union entirely.

"Mr. Orban you keep saying you want to stay a member of this European Union but it's not just your country that's been insulted today - you've been insulted. Come and join the Brexit club - you'll love it."

Hungary: Brussels wants to speed up the inflow of illegal migrants

Hungary sees increasing pressure from pro-migration forces in the EU, Hungarian State Minister for EU Affairs Judit Varga says in an interview.
Varga tells Echo TV, that an interview with Judith Sargentini, the author of a report criticising Hungary’s democracy and migration policy, is a sign that blackmail is used to influence the country’s migration policy.
Sargentini said earlier in an interview that the EU can interfere in a country’s internal affairs and that it is an illusion that member states are sovereign.
“This statement (of Sargentini) clearly shows that the report is political blackmail, aimed at depriving Hungary of its sovereignty and to exert pressure on its migration policy,” Varga says.
According to her the Sargentini report was meant to punish the Hungarian people for refusing to become a migrant country.
“They want us to accept a pro-migration policy but we are having none of it,” Varga adds.
A majority of the European Parliament voted in favour of Sargentini’s report about Hungary and as a result an Article 7 procedure against the country was started.
Though the majority wasn’t the legally required two-thirds of votes cast, they changed the rule for the day to include abstainers to make up that difference.
The procedure could result in Hungary losing its voting rights in the parliament.

Hungary passes resolution: EU report attacks us because we didn’t take migrants and criminalised the organisation of illegal migration

Hungarian lawmakers passed a resolution which urges the government “not to give in to blackmail” regarding the European Parliament’s report – written by Judith Sargentini – according to which the country is breaching European values.
The MPs approved the resolution with 129 votes in favour, 26 against and 18 abstentions. Fidesz MPs and 4 independent MPs, who have recently left Jobbik’s group voted in favour. Jobbik’s MPs abstained; LMP, MSZP, DK, Parbeszed and two left-liberal independent MPs voted against the resolution.
The resolution was submitted by the Minister Heading the PM’s Office, Gergely Gulyas and Fidesz group leader Mate Kocsis.

The documents rejects the “slanderous pro-migration indictments made in the Sargentini Report”, adding that it “attacks Hungary on the grounds that it didn’t take in migrants, refused to accept the resettlement quotas, closed its borders and criminalised the organisation of illegal migration”.
