CAIR Asks N.C. Judges to Allow Use of Quran In Oaths; Exclusive Use of Bible Called 'State Endorsement of Religion'

WASHINGTON, June 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on judges meeting this week in North Carolina to allow use of the Quran, Islam's revealed text, when administering oaths.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the current exclusive use of the Bible may be an inappropriate state endorsement of religion.

CAIR issued its call after Guilford County judges said they would not allow use of Qurans in their courtrooms. "An oath on the Quran is not a lawful oath under our law," said W. Douglas Albright, Guilford's senior resident Superior Court judge. State law only refers to swearing an oath by putting a hand on the "Holy Scriptures." Those who do not wish to take an oath using the Bible may instead make an "affirmation."

A preliminary opinion last week by North Carolina's Administrative Office of the Courts said that state law allows people to be sworn in using a Quran rather than a Bible.

"By stating that only one book qualifies as 'Holy Scriptures,' the court may be making an inappropriate endorsement of a single set of religious beliefs," said CAIR Legal Director Arsalan Iftikhar. "Eliminating the opportunity to swear an oath on one's own holy text may also have the effect of diminishing the credibility of that person's testimony."

Iftikhar said CAIR will offer a free copy of the Quran to any judge in North Carolina or throughout the United States for use in oaths or for personal awareness of the holy text. Judges or other court officials may order a free Quran by visiting: http://www.explorethequran.org

Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Yes, they want to change American and American laws to re-invent the hell-holes they left. If they liked it so well there why don't they just go back?? They're beginning to piss us off.

No it's not idiot. It doesn't promote any one religion and this may come as a shock to you people, but this country was founded on judeo christian principles and that's the way it's always been. You are free to worship how you want, but that doesn't mean that you should press your beliefs on us. You came here and it's you adapt to us, not we adapt to you. You don't like it then leave. You can't press your religion on us anymore than a mormon can do for a baptist or a catholic can do for a methodist.

Exactly and that's the way it should be. If the Muslims don't like it they can go back to whence they came from and they can have Islamic law through out the land. We all know that Islamic countries are so successfully run. Oh wait, that's right, all of them are third world rat holes, yet they think they can come here and change the country into there own version of Crapistan. They have a lot of nerve doing this crap after 9-11. They should be grateful that we still allow them into the country, but no, they want to have their cake and eat it too.

What religion would that be? The bible covers a wide variety of religions. Buddists don't believe in the bible, should we allow them to meditate instead of swearing in on the bible. Maybe we can allow devil worshippers to sacrafice a goat instead of swearing in on the bible. Where do we draw the line and say no more?

Yeah they always want us to be tolerant of them, but they don't want to be tolerant of our beliefs. If I want a better understanding of Islam, all I would have to do is go to their part of Crapistan and shout I'm a Christian. Granted I won't last two seconds, but at least I'll have a better understanding of Islam. Oh and their prophet Mohammed was a pedophile. Yeah I'm sure Jesus Christ adhered to the word of God by raping little boys. Yeah I must have read that somewhere in Romans (obvious sarcasm in case you all didn't know). Just read up on Mohammed and that's all you need to know about this false religion.

Roadrunner, I totally agree with you. They came here on their own
free will, they are afraid of their own brothers in the Islamic faith.
If their religion is so great why have they been and still is killing each
other off on a daily basis. I have read the Koran and have one. Who
in the hell would believe anything good could come from those people.
They will see wrong and never speak up, even among themselves.

Many culture want to come to America and then change it to resemble
what they fled from. Figure that one!

Whats more is that they claim Islam is peaceful, meanwhile they run around slaughtering people who refuse to convert in mainly Muslim areas, they force the adoption of the Shira law which is cruel and unusual punishment. And before we know it, half the world will be ruled by Islam ... they took over almost all of Africa in just 40 years.
