Is Trump's Sanctuary Order A Ruse?

Sounds like it may be, according to what a Justice Department attorney argued:
    ___________________________

    Excerpts from ABC News 4/14/17

President Donald Trump's executive order withholding funding from communities that limit cooperation with immigration authorities applies to a small pot of grant money, not the billions of dollars that San Francisco and a California county say is at stake for them, a lawyer with the Department of Justice said Friday.

The order would affect less than $1 million in funding for Santa Clara County and possibly no money for San Francisco, Readler said. "There is no mystery," he said.

It's possible, but every little bit helps.

Also, is it possible there are other forms of government monies that go to cities other the that particular fund?

We got to the present illegal immigrant crisis through a slow and relentless application of pressure and accommodation. The frog in the stew pot. I think the problem is best confronted the same way. Don't look for immediate gratification in confronting the illegal immigration problem. I am beginning to have my doubts about Trump, but I don't think a slow response is evidence of a problem here. Some sort of amnesty coming from the White House would be serious trouble and at this point, it wouldn't surprise me.

It's small money because it's only the federal money that applies to law enforcement grants. The people who will wail about it are the law enforcement agencies losing their federal money to buy and pay for stuff they wouldn't otherwise have to use and pay for. Trump wants these law enforcement agencies on his side, not only cooperating with the ICE detainers, but actually helping US enforce US immigration law. Lets see how it plays out. They are on notice, they will be losing some money, and we'll see how it goes. Whether you stop sanctuary cities or not, doesn't stop Trump and his team to find and deport these people, it just makes it much more difficult, risky that they'll get away, and double work that taxpayers are paying for, paying for the local arrest and process and paying again at the federal level to arrest the same person.

I pretty much agree with you. However, I would like to see him keep the promises he made to the American people. DACA is an excellent example of what I'm talking about.

Again, I can't believe these are the only funds going to cities.

Maybe he could put some strings on the 'set aside' funds that politicians 'set aside' to pay off their contributors back home.

No, it's not the only federal funds going to cities, it's the only funds related to law enforcement that pertains to the ICE detainers. You can't pull all federal funds for this reason, only those that apply to the issue. DOJ can't pull Education Funds, or HHS funds, or HUD Funds, or Transporation Funds. DOJ can only pull the funds that apply to the bad act or grievance under their authority.

Thanks, Judy. I hadn't thought of that way.
