NC EconWatch: Textile workers losing jobs at Tarboro plant

Associated Press

TARBORO, N.C. - A textile plant that produces artificial fur will lay off 126 employees and move production to Canada and China, the owners said.

Glenoit Fabrics said Monday that 95 people will lose their jobs Nov. 18 and the rest of the layoffs will happen by Dec. 18.

The company will try to set up job fairs for the workers, but none will receive severance pay, plant manager Jerry Howard said.

The company blamed the move on higher costs.

Seventeen employees working in special finishing will remain at the plant, Howard said.

A separate Glenoit plant in Tarboro will stop production next month and lay off 218 people, the company has said previously. Its production was also being moved to China, the company said.

"We're doing everything we can to replace those jobs, but it's extremely difficult," said Edgecombe County Manager Lorenzo Carmon. "This is just another example of how we are affected by the global economy."
