Nolte: Luther Strange Endorsement Is Just Latest Awful Advice Trump Received from Jared Kushner

To no one’s surprise, President Donald Trump is apparently “furious” over his woefully misguided decision to go all-in for Luther Strange in Alabama’s U.S. Senate primary.

It was a decision that blew spectacularly up in the president’s face last night with Strange’s massive 10-point loss to Roy Moore, an outsider much closer in spirit to Trumpism than establishment crony Strange.

In what is becoming a disturbing pattern, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner was apparently one of those who advised the president to back Strange, to once again sail into big, jagged rocks — a humiliation for Trump that anyone with any real-world political sense should have (and did) seen coming from a mile away.

Appointed under shady circumstances, Strange is a walking-talking poster child for everything Trump ran against, a good ole’ boy, Republican establishment backslapper strongly backed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has done nothing but post failure after failure since Trump’s inauguration.

What makes this Kushner catastrophe even more notable than the others (which I will get to), is that this time Trump led with his chin, was out there publicly championing a sure-loser, and most importantly, was doing so in defiance of his own base.

For the first time since he stepped into the political arena, Trump did not look like a leader, he looked led — he looked like a weak politician being handled and manipulated.

One of the primary reasons Trump is president today is his belligerent strength. In the face of withering hellfire from the media, Democrats, and even many in his own party, Trump remains his own man. But over the last week in Alabama, Trump did not look like his own man. Rather, he looked out of touch, like someone who no longer trusts the instincts that made him our 45th president, like someone who is relying on those with their own agenda.

Moreover, Kushner’s objectively awful advice to back Strange has succeeded in doing the only thing that could be fatal to Trump’s presidency and re-election prospects — driven a wedge between the president and his supporters. This time, at least, the wedge appears to be temporary and those supporters forgiving.

But how many times can Trump make this kind of mistake before doubts begin to creep in?

And how many “fool me once” chances will the 36-year-old Mr. Kushner receive from his devoted father-in-law?

Let us not forget that it was Kushner who advised Trump to fire F.B.I. Director James Comey, a move that resulted in the appointment of Robert Mueller, a special counsel that looms over the presidency like a dark cloud. Even those like myself who agreed with the decision to fire Comey (for the good of the country) were gobsmacked to learn that Kushner sold the idea to Trump with the ludicrous argument that the decision would be a “win” with Democrats.

Numerous reports again named Kushner as one of the primary influences behind Trump’s flirtation with the idea of breaking one of his solemn campaign promises regarding illegal immigration. It was only after the nickname #AmnestyDon looked as though it was going to stick like #CorruptHillary that the president, again looking weak and ill-served by his team, scurried away.

At this point, bringing up Kushner’s counsel to hire the five-alarm debacle that was Anthony Scaramucci and this brand new email scandal just feels like piling on.

When producer David O. Selznick went to work for his father-in-law Louis B. Mayer at MGM, the snide joke around the studio, a take on the popular Hemingway novel, was “the son-in-law also rises.” The jokes stopped after Selznick went on to produce a series of smash hits like King Kong and the Oscar-winning masterpieces Rebecca and Gone with the Wind.

Thus far, Kushner has only managed to produce Robert Mueller, Luther Strange, Anthony Scaramucci, and something that even the entire mainstream media could not conjure … damage to something that once looked indestructible, Trump’s political brand.

Get the jarvankas out of the WH - spoiled rich kids with no experience we don't need; aren't even respectful to the campaign promises to Americans. They are so privileged/important TOO THEMSELVES. We have a potus that is not experienced in politics but better than a crooked clinton - we don't need A THREESOME OF INEXPERIENCE AND A LIBERAL BASED KELLY TOO.

Let them go back to making millions on their businesses and trying to have daughter Tiffany receive 20% less inheritance on their fathers death. If ivanka has one more nose job, she will be at the michael jackson fake tip door.

Report: Jared Kushner Told Trump to Back Luther Strange to ‘Enrage Steve Bannon’

    Evan Vucci / Associated Press

Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, told President Trump to back Sen. Luther Strange’s (R-AL) failed bid for election in part because he believed Strange’s victory would “enrage Steve Bannon,” according to a report.

    The Huffington Post reported Thursday:
According to two sources who work closely with the young real estate tycoon, Kushner suggested the endorsement, in part, because he believed that a Strange victory would enrage Steve Bannon, the newly reinstalled executive chairman of Breitbart News and a nemesis of Kushner’s from their time together in the Trump White House.

Kushner also thought getting Trump to support Strange would improve his own “tenuous standing with Republican leaders in the Senate,” Bannon allies told HuffPost.

“He’s going to need them if things go south in the Russia investigation,” one ally explained.

Trump was reportedly “embarrassed and pissed” after Strange was trounced in the primary race by Judge Roy Moore, who was backed by Bannon and other conservative leaders.

Trump’s ill-fated endorsement of Strange put him on the same side as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who is detested among Trump’s base as a Washington swamp figure.

Heeding the advice of Kushner and other White House senior advisers, Trump even came to Alabama last Friday to rally for Strange. Bannon on Monday evening rallied for Moore.

Moore beat Strange by 10 percentage points — 54.6 to 45.4.

Trump on Wednesday deleted all his tweets urging Alabamans to vote for Strange.
The Huffington Post reported that Kushner was a “critical early voice” in convincing Trump to take a side:

Presidents rarely endorse one candidate over another in a primary election. But Kushner was a critical early voice in convincing the president to take a side. McConnell and Rick Dearborn, the White House deputy chief of staff, also were instrumental at various points in the process. Sources close to Bannon noted that Trump first tweeted about Strange on Aug. 8, when Kushner was with the president at his country club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
A former adviser to Trump, Sam Nunberg, told the HuffPost, “No senior adviser to the president in their right mind would ever lead the president to get involved in a primary, let alone a highly contested one that pitted his own base against him,” he said. “Anyone with a pulse knew that Luther was going to lose the runoff. Luther barely survived the primary.”

The HuffPost suggested that Trump was not even aware of Moore until after he won the first round of voting last month, with 39 percent.

A veteran Republican strategist who ran Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) presidential campaign and was hired by Strange had convinced Kushner to convince the president to back Strange, according to the report.

“Roe sent Kushner emails loaded with polling data that suggested Strange would win easily over Moore and the third candidate in August’s primary election, Rep. Mo Brooks. Kushner forwarded those emails ‘to appropriate parties,’ a White House official said.”

The official denied that Kushner had ever spoken to the president about Brooks or the Alabama race.

Several sources close to both Moore and Bannon said they believe Kushner wanted to show McConnell that he had real influence with the president and that he wanted to show the president that he knew how to win, the report said.

“All Jared thinks about is beating Bannon,” a friend of Bannon’s told the HuffPost. “It consumed him before Bannon left the White House, and it consumes him now.” A source who knows Kushner well confirmed that was true, while the White House dismissed it as “totally untrue.”
Two sources confirmed that Trump told confidants after the loss the he is not upset with Bannon, who until August was his chief strategist.

“What he feels about Kushner and his role in the Alabama fiasco is not known,” the report said.
