Fifteen minutes before high noon Wednesday, President Barack Obama is scheduled to announce what some news agencies are describing as a “sweeping set of gun control measures” and he will use children as a backdrop.

The children reportedly come from across the country and were invited to the event because of letters they wrote to the president following the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, according to the Washington Post and Washington Examiner.

The president has reportedly been considering up to 19 possible executive actions, and people attending the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show here in Las Vegas are waiting to see what they are.

The 11:45 a.m. announcement comes on the second day of the SHOT Show, being held at the Sands Convention Center. According to the Washington Post, Obama’s agenda will include a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” limits on magazine capacity and universal background checks aimed at closing the so-called “gun show loophole.”

All of these proposals may serve only to energize gun owners this coming Saturday, Jan. 19 — designated “Gun Appreciation Day” — when people are being urged to visit a gun shop or gun range, or engage in some other firearms-related activity.

Gun shows have become a favorite target of gun prohibitionists, despite the fact that none of the recent high-profile mass shooting incidents involved firearms obtained at gun shows. Gunmen involved in shootings at Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, the Batman Massacre, Clackamas Mall and elsewhere obtained their firearms either via retail sale or by stealing them.

At the same time the White House announced the Wednesday event, the National Rifle Association was reporting 250,000 new memberships since the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., according to U.S. News. Likewise, new memberships and a surge in contributions have been pouring into other gun rights organizations, including the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

SAF’s booth at the SHOT Show was very busy on opening morning of the four-day event, and the group was advertising the Gun Appreciation Day event with a large poster on one wall.

Gun industry professionals at the SHOT Show had been anticipating an announcement on Tuesday, but it is now scheduled midday Wednesday.

Meanwhile, according to the Weekly Standard, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has called on congressional Republicans to hold hearings on criminal violence in Chicago, the president’s adopted home town. More than 500 homicides were reported there last year, while the city continued to enforce one of the most restrictive municipal gun laws in the nation.
“If gun control works,” Gingrich said, “Chicago ought to be safe.”
