President Obama on Friday dismissed Donald Trump's "America first" philosophy on trade, saying globalization is here to stay and "we're not going to be able to build a wall around that."
"Globalization is a fact because of technology, because of an integrated global supply chain, because of changes in transportation, and we're not going to be able to build a wall around that," Obama said in a joint press conference with Mexico President Enrique Peņa Nieto at the White House.
"What we can do is to shape how that process of global integration proceeds so that it increases opportunities for ordinary people, so it's creating better jobs, so we are strengthening protections for workers, so we are addressing some of the environmental challenges that come with rapid growth," Obama said.
Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has vowed to end talks on the Obama-backed Trans-Pacific Partnership and make "better deals."
Obama said the U.S. needs to "look forward" and find ways to shape the new direction of the global economy instead of "looking backward" and trying to "undo what's taken place."
