Columbus building evacuated after report of gunpowder and loud "bang."

The police headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, was evacuated Tuesday evening after a report of a possible explosion, local media reported.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

A worker reported smelling gunpowder just before hearing a lound "bang" about 7:30 p.m., WSYX-TV reported, citing police.

The noise came from the second floor, where a deli is located, WBNS-TV reported, citing dispatchers who said there was no fire.

The downtown building was placed on lockdown as police investigated. Streets around the headquarters were closed.

Columbus Police Headquarters Reopens After Explosion

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Division of Fire and Homeland Security reopened Columbus Police Headquarters after an explosion Tuesday evening.

A loud noise was heard inside the building in the 100 block of Marconi Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

After a thorough search of the building, investigators with the Columbus Division of Fire and Homeland Security discovered the blast came from a battery on a hydraulic ladder in the lobby.

Police Headquarters and the Franklin County Jails, located on South Front Street and Jackson Pike, were placed on lockdown at about 9:30 p.m. People were allowed back inside around 1 a.m.

Columbus fire officials said there were no reports of injuries.

The Columbus Bomb Squad returned to police headquarters Wednesday morning.

Police say it was only a precautionary measure.
