Oregon Militias Threaten Violence Over GOP Carbon Credit Standoff; Capitol Closed For Safety

"The safety of legislators, staff and citizen visitors could be compromised."

Oregon militias have reportedly threatened violence over an ongoing standoff between GOP and Democratic state legislators over climate change legislation, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"The State Police Superintendent just informed the Senate president of a credible threat from militia groups coming to the Capitol tomorrow," reads a text message sent out to senators on Friday. "The Superintendent strongly recommends that no one come to the Capitol."
It is unclear what the threats were, as the state's Democratic leadership did not provide evidence of their claim.

"The safety of legislators, staff and citizen visitors could be compromised if certain threatened behaviors were realized," said state police captain Tim Fox.
On Thursday, the Three Percenters, a group that joined the armed takeover in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016, said it would do whatever was necessary to keep the Republican senators safe. The Republicans said they wouldn’t accept the group’s help. -Wall Street Journal
What began as a disagreement over a cap-and-trade bill that exacerbated a growing divide between city-dwelling Oregon liberals and their conservative rural counterparts erupted into a full-fledged standoff after eleven GOP senators banded together and are refusing to show up for the vote. Despite holding an 18 to 12 supermajority in the House and Senate, Democrats cannot approve the bill without at least two Republicans present. After several days of heated debate between the two sides, eleven GOP members mutually agreed to boycott the vote.
The bill, HB 2020, would make Oregon the second state in the country to set up a cap-and-trade system for all sectors of the economy. California was the first, after passing a similar bill in 2016.
Democrats had scheduled a vote on the bill Thursday, but all 11 Republican senators fled the state. At least 20 senators must be present for a quorum, so Democrats need at least two Republicans present to hold a vote. -Wall Street Journal
After Governor Brown (D) authorized state police to hunt down and wrangle the absentee GOP lawmakers, Sen. Brian Boquist (R) said he was prepared for a bloody standoff if state troopers show up - warning "Send bachelors, and come heavily armed; I’m not going to be a political prisoner in the state of Oregon, it’s just that simple."
Oregon state senator @BrianBoquistGOP said if R's walk out to stop a vote on Cap and Trade and @OregonGovBrown sends state police to bring him back, they should be single and well armed. Your take?

On Saturday, Oregon State Police said that they were monitoring threats and that they were closing the building.

The eleven senators are also being hit with a $500 daily fine for each day they refuse to show up for the vote. They say they won't come back until Democrats agree to major changes in the bill, which they have argued would cripple manufacturing and other industries in the state. "This bill needs to be referred to the voters" due to its profound impact on Oregon's economy, said Republican senate leader Sen. Herman Baertschiger Jr., speaking by phone from outside the state.
Sen. Michael Dembrow, one of the Democratic architects of the bill, said manufacturers had already been given major exemptions under the bill and that Republicans were only stalling to kill the bill. Voters could still gather signatures for a ballot measure to repeal the bill, he said, but unlike with a referendum, work on it could proceed in the meantime.
He said the Democrats’ resolve had been strengthened by the Republicans’ flight from the state. “The last thing we can do is make this kind of behavior the norm, because then it’ll happen every session,” Mr. Dembrow said. -Wall Street Journal
Democratic legislators say they will return to the Senate floor Sunday whether or not Republicans had returned.

Apparently our friends fighting illegal immigration have some skin in this game.

    Check this out...

It's bigger than that. The party in charge has been bullying bad bills through all session. OFIR is working to defeat HB 2015 - driver licenses for illegal aliens. If the Senators stay away, HB 2015, which is currently sitting in Ways and Means will die there.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Undocumented immigrants in Oregon will legally be able to obtain driver's licenses under a measure sent to the governor's desk.
Senators voted 17-10 Saturday to expand driving privileges to all Oregon residents regardless of their immigration status. Gov. Kate Brown is expected to sign.

The move will make Oregon the 14th state to allow undocumented immigrants to drive. New York approved a similar measure earlier this month.
The bill has been a priority for pro-immigration groups who say that undocumented immigrants often live in rural areas which requires having a car. Those without proof of residence say they live in fear that they could be deported over a traffic stop.

Opponents say that the measure should be sent to the ballot considering voters shot down a similar proposal in 2016.

They are not legally allowed to "reside" in our country and as "illegal residents" they should NOT be awarded government issued drivers licenses.

ICE needs to use these databases to round them up and deport the whole family.

These Governors need to be prosecuted for harboring, aiding, and abetting illegal aliens.

They need to be prosecuted for EMBEZZLEMENT of taxpayer funds, misappropriation of those funds, and using those taxpayer funds to pay for illegal aliens.

We are not paying our taxes to benefit illegal aliens.

This is treason and sedition and interference in our elections by foreigners, our Federal laws, and needs to be stopped!

We cannot allow these Rogue Governors destroy our states and our country by awarding foreign citizens our benefits, our rights, and our privileges reserved for American citizens.
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

She didn't get her bill passed, so now she is taking it out of the legislatures hands and becoming executive privilege? Can you say dictatorship? I sure hope the recall on the 15th works!

Oregon governor ready to take lead on divisive climate plan

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Monday that she's ready to use her executive power to lower carbon emissions following a nine-day Republican walkout that derailed landmark climate legislation and embroiled the state in a political crisis pitting liberal cities against rural residents.
The Democratic governor said she wants to move forward through the executive branch if lawmakers can't approve meaningful climate legislation. She directed her staff to go back to rural communities and industries over the next few months to find points of compromise on what would be the nation's second statewide cap and trade program.
Brown will present lawmakers with proposed "modifications" to the plan but is prepared to take the matter into her own hands if she still can't find a path forward in the Statehouse.

"Working on legislation is my preferred approach," she told reporters. "However, given the uncertainty that now permeates Oregon's political system, I am also directing my staff and agencies to explore alternative paths."

Two representatives for the Senate's Republican caucus didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment on the governor's plans.
The proposal caps climate-changing emissions and requires businesses to buy or trade an ever-dwindling pool of pollution credits or "allowances." California has a similar program.
The idea divided the Statehouse and revealed lingering tensions between liberal cities like Portland that want to combat climate change and rural areas of the state where the legislation was seen as a further threat to industries like farming, logging and trucking.
Senate Republicans walked out to block a vote on the measure and only came back after getting reassurances it was dead. They said the legislation would kill jobs, raise the cost of fuel and gut small businesses in rural areas. Loggers, truckers and others flooded the Capitol to support the Republicans who walked out.
Democrats say the legislation is critical to make Oregon a leader in the fight against climate change and will ultimately create jobs and transform the economy.
They said the program would raise tens of millions of dollars that would go toward further emissions-cutting projects and wildfire prevention efforts. Much of the funding also would flow directly to rural communities and Native American tribes to prepare for the worst effects of climate change, supporters say.
"This is a priority," said Tera Hurst, executive director of Renew Oregon, the lobbying group behind the original legislation. "It is our moral imperative we do not delay another year. Climate change is an emergency."
Brown has a tough path forward if she wants to craft legislation that both responds to industry concerns and still puts Oregon on a path toward meeting its ambitious goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The original cap and trade proposal would have begun in 2021 and put the state on track to lower emissions to 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2035 and 80 percent below by 2050.
Delaying the program could mean lawmakers will need to craft a more ambitious and aggressive program to meet the state's emission goals.
Brown said it would have been better for industries and other opponents to come to the table rather than "blow the whole thing up." She said delaying the process further is like "cutting off your nose to spite your face."
"This program will have to be more aggressive," the governor said. "Because the time pressures are still there and I'm committed to keeping those goals for our children and our children's future."

It would be better help another state protect the 2nd Amendment than wait for the battle to come to your own state. Get involved in the Oregon 2A debate and promote a 2A Amendment candidate in their election process.

OR GOP Starts Recall Effort Against Gov. Kate Brown

Oregon Republicans and Democratic Governor Kate Brown have been at odds for a while now. I have been very critical of Brown’s efforts to cram gun control down the throat of lawmakers representing rural voters, people who need guns to thwart animal attacks, even if the animals are of the two-legged variety.
Brown’s efforts have been the epitome of tyrannical overreach by a state governor, and anyone watching through an unbiased lens can see that plain as day.
Now, state Republicans are firing back at Brown.
The Oregon Republican Party launched Monday a recall campaign against Democratic Gov. Kate Brown after a contentious legislative session that saw her sic state troopers on runaway GOP legislators fighting her climate-change agenda.
The recall paperwork, filed Monday by Oregon GOP chair Bill Currier, accused her of ignoring or overturning the will of the voters on driver’s licenses for illegal aliens and tax increases, as well as denying citizens protection from “the domestic terrorist threat known as Antifa.”
“Governor Brown has subjected the people of Oregon to a long line of abuses of power while at the same time refusing to address their legitimate concerns,” said the recall statement. “She has fostered a toxic political environment that stifles meaningful discourse. She has threatened retaliation against her own citizens when her political agenda is not successful in the legislature.”
Ms. Brown’s office did not respond immediately Monday to a request for comment.
Mr. Currier said the party must collect about 280,000 valid signatures to force a special election on the recall, which would likely be held in November or December.
Any gubernatorial recall must be viewed as a longshot — only two governors have ever been recalled — but Mr. Currier said Ms. Brown’s ambitious progressive agenda has angered multiple groups, including small business owners, loggers, trucker, gun owners, and foes of mandatory vaccines.
“We have a critical mass of voting blocs right now,” said Mr. Currier.
That may be. However, I’m still not sure this is a good idea.
While Republicans may feel they have a “critical mass,” this is Oregon we’re talking about here. The larger urban centers are still going to side with Brown or someone who will be equally bad on a number of issues, including guns. They’re not about to vote Republican, even if they’re furious with Brown.
I can’t help but wonder if these resources would be better spent trying to inform the electorate of how horrible Brown’s policies are, and not just the unpopular ones. Hit everything and maybe try and shift at least some of the urban voters toward a more conservative point of view. While the cities won’t ever go red, they don’t really have to. They just need to go enough toward purple that Democrats running have to consider that and pull back on some of the rhetoric. Maybe they’ll stop trying to push insane gun control laws, for example.
Frankly, I wish them luck on the recall effort, but I’d be very surprised if Brown is removed from office.
