    Outrage in Alabama

    Outrage in Alabama
    Sunday, August 7, 2011

Were the amnesty-happy Obama administration's immigration enforcement less slack, states -- the latest being Alabama -- wouldn't need to pass laws that crack down on illegal aliens and trigger Justice Department lawsuits.

A new Alabama law, effective Sept. 1, requires police who stop suspected illegals to check their immigration status, mandates businesses' use of the federal E-Verify database to check applicants' job eligibility, and makes renting housing to illegals a crime.

Justice contends the Alabama law interferes with federal immigration law. But its preliminary-injunction filing in federal court in Birmingham confirms that Justice, like the Obama administration as a whole, disregards the meaning of "illegal" when it comes to immigration.

"Unlawful" means "illegal." What's "illegal" is "criminal." Yet Justice contends the Alabama law should be struck down because it attempts "to criminalize unlawful presence."

    Huh?

By declining to treat being in the U.S. illegally as a crime, the Justice Department betrays its pro-amnesty agenda -- and the Obama administration's lack of interest in securing U.S. borders and prosecuting those who violate them. That's a dereliction of duty -- and a perversion of both Justice's mission and justice itself.
