Some Gay Voters Say it's 'Dangerous' to Come Out for Trump

Following Sunday's mass shooting at an Orlando gay bar, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has voiced - and tweeted - his support for the LGBTQ community. And some in the community have expressed their support for Trump.

"He's the most pro-gay nominee that the party has ever had for president," according to Gregory T. Angelo, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, an organization for LGBTQ people and straight allies who support the GOP.
""He's the most pro-gay nominee that the party has ever had for president.""

LGBTQ voters, however, overwhelmingly lean Democratic. Exit polls from the 2012 election found 76 percent of voters who identified as gay voted for Barack Obama, while only 22 percent voted for Mitt Romney. In 2014, a gallup poll showed more than 60 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender voters identified as Democrats, and a May 2016 poll found 84 percent of likely LGBTQ voters preferred Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump.

Trump may see an opportunity to bring more LGBTQ voters into the Republican column, and recent remarks he has made signal a move to court the community. While many other Republican politicians failed to acknowledge the LGBTQ community in their reactions to the Orlando shooting, for example, Trump was one of the few exceptions.

In a speech about national security just a day after the attack, he said "Our nation stands together in solidarity with the members of Orlando's LGBT Community." He then called the attack "an assault on the ability of free people to live their lives, love who they want, and express their identity."

Trump then took to Twitter and criticized Hillary Clinton in an appeal to LGBTQ voters.

A number of gay men who have decided to throw their support behind Trump told NBC OUT it has not been an easy road. Juan Hernandez, a gay and Latino member of the Log Cabin Republicans, said his support led to physical violence by anti-Trump protesters at a rally in San Jose. Images of the attack and his bloodied clothes went viral.

"This is politics. Debate is OK," Hernandez said. "When you start getting violent and throwing out derogatory terms, that's not OK."

Americans, please listen. Donald Trump will be the most Pro-American President in the history of our nation. Donald Trump is pro-gay, pro-woman, pro-black, pro-asian, pro-Hispanic/Latino, pro-white, pro-mixed, pro-whatever you are. As long as you're a citizen of this country, Donald Trump is for you, your family, your job, your wages, your freedoms, your security, your education, your healthcare, your joy, your happiness, your business, your water, your soil, your air, your borders, your resources, your past, present and future, your everything.

I don't agree with Trump on everything. For example, I'm Pro-Choice, he's Pro-Life. I am a FairTax Supporter, and his tax plan while reducing income taxes, still sustains the income tax based system. I'm opposed to any type of gun control at all of any kind, because that's what the Constitution says, it says our right to bear arms shall not be infringed, that means no waiting period, no registration, no bans, no permits, no nothing, and Trump appears to support along with the NRA permits for concealed carry, waiting periods, background checks, and so forth. These are "infringements".

But on almost everything else that I can think of that he has said and is fighting for, I agree with him. No one person is going to agree with all of US 100% of the time on 100% of our views. So we have to support our candidates on the volume and importance of the issues.

And on immigration and trade, no one is even in the same ball park with him. These are the two issues that are destroying our country and impoverishing our citizens. This must be stopped for the benefit of all Americans, no matter your race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, age, sex or whatever.

So Americans have the choice to be private silent supporters of Donald Trump and perhaps that is best in many cases to protect themselves. But this is a time when America's Voice does need to be heard, so it may take some risk and courage to elect Donald Trump, and I hope most Americans can figure out how to do this and still be safe.

Trump Supporters will have to work harder than any group of political supporters ever have, something I know we can do and believe with all my heart, we will do.
