GOP CONGRESSMAN: Military Members Keep Telling Me To Vote No On Syria

GOP CONGRESSMAN: Military Members Keep Telling Me To Vote No On Syria

    PAUL SZOLDRA
    Business Insider
    September 1, 2013

After President Obama delivered a speech in the Rose Garden where he said the United States “should” strike Syria following a deadly chemical weapons attack, Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) took to Twitter to dispute that claim with comments from those who would likely carry out that order.

“I’ve been hearing a lot from members of our Armed Forces,” Amash tweeted. “The message I consistently hear: Please vote no on military action against Syria.”

Now that Obama has deferred to congressional debate, a vote on striking Syria would likely come up on the week of Sep. 9. The President probably has the support of the Senate, but the vote could have some trouble in the House, as Josh Barro points out.

Since Amash’s initial tweet, he’s been retweeting comments that have been sent in from military members and veterans. Many of my own military sources have expressed reservations with action in Syria, especially following service in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

    Here’s a sampling:

Rep. King, Sen. Inhofe: Congress Would Vote 'No' on Syria at This Time

AS SEEN ON FOX NEWS SUNDAY WITH CHRIS WALLACE

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) criticized President Obama’s decision to let Congress vote on using military action in Syria. On Fox News Sunday, he stated that under the Constitution, that the president is authorized to use military force without Congress’s approval.

Krauthammer: 'This Is Amateur Hour' for President Obama

"This is a clear failure of leadership,” Rep. King said. “And if he feels so strongly about it and if he doesn’t want to take the action himself, then he should call us back into session tomorrow.”
Congress is scheduled to return from vacation on September 9th. Earlier on Fox News Sunday, Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed that sarin gas was found in the hair and blood samples of first responders in Syria.
Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), a ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, told Chris Wallace that he does not believe Congress will approve taking military action.
Rep. King intends to vote ‘yes,’ but agreed with Sen. Inhofe, adding, “I’m hoping by the time next week comes around, and hopefully the president can make his case, that he will be able to get a majority of the House of Representatives. Right now, it will be very difficult.”
