Joe Arpaio, the outspoken sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona, tells Newsmax TV that Americans leery of Donald Trump's bravado and bluster as he makes ambitious presidential campaign promises have absolutely nothing to fear.

"I believed in him right from the beginning," Arpaio, who has already endorsed Trump, said Friday to J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"I'm not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, but I think I understand him. He's a very proud person, so if you think he's making all these promises that he's not going to keep, I've got news for you.

"His character will drive him to keep his promises. So watch out, because he's going to keep most of those promises."

Arpaio — an outspoken advocate of stronger U.S.-Mexico border security and rules governing illegal aliens — says he has met numerous times with Trump, who advocates building a wall along the dividing line that Mexico will be forced to pay for.

"He's a regular guy … He really is an honest guy. He tells it like it is … He means it, he means it and he's got the guts to speak out. He's got money, but what I like about him is he's a regular guy," Arpaio said.

"I like other things that he stands for, not just the illegal immigration. The guns and the economic problems we have, he's honest, speaks out, he isn't afraid of the media. You know how that is."
