Why Brian Bilbray supported the Merida Plan.
We met with Bilbray a few weeks ago and he brought up the controversial Meridia Act that will send $1.6 bil to Mexico to fight the drug cartel wars. We were all pretty much against the idea on its surface and Brian said he knew it was being questioned by a lot of people like us and he wanted to give some insight why he was supporting it.
He said something like this:
If we don't give them financial support they will just keep complaining that all the drug violence is all America's fault due to our appetite for drugs and because we didn't do anything to help.
If we do give the money, it will either help or it won't - time will tell. If the money which is for training and equipment works and reduces the cartels and their control of the borders then great. If it fails, Mexico will have no more excuses and blame for their failures and then we will have the right and the responsibility to further secure our border and take tougher steps at the border from our end. I think he said something about backing Bush into a corner on this, i.e., we'll try it your way first, but if it doesn't work, then we do it my way. I think he also sold it that if we give the $$ to Mex, we also need strong ICE enforcement in the interior, so in other words, we give a little (to Bush) to get a little.
So the way Bilbray sells it, its a win-win for the U.S. I'm probably not saying it like he did, but it made a lot of sense. Then he did a long interview on Fox News yesterday about this same question and he pointed out that the Mexican violence is spilling over into the U.S. now big time, especially in San Diego with the kidnappings and violence. He said we have to do something now INSIDE Mexico or it will get a lot worse.
I hope this answers some questions I know most of you have. If you still have questions, don't pass rumors, call his office and ask! 858-350-1150.
I'm not trying to convince you its a great deal so please don't reply to me, I'm just telling you what he said. Again, if you still have questions or comments, call HIM!

Mexico will have no more excuses and blame for their failures and then we will have the right and the responsibility to further secure our border and take tougher steps
This is what I have a problem with. Don't we have the right and responsibility to further secure our border and take tougher steps NOW?
It is our border after all. Mexico is a direct threat to us.
I find that statement a little troubling coming from an elected official who should know that we can damned well do with our border what is in our best interest when we feel like doing so without "buying" permission from Mexico.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
