Professor Says Young Voters’ Adoration Of Bernie Sanders Is A Failure Of Education

Kind of nice when someone from traditionally liberal academia acknowledges that there is a HUGE problem.

Professor David Deming at the University of Oklahoma has written a column talking about the Bernie Sanders phenomenon and why young voters seem so enamored of him – and also how troubling that is. If you ask me, his assessment is right on the money. Especially considering that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not that long ago (relatively speaking). Shoot, neither was 9/11. Problem is, the kids who are in college now barely remember 9/11 (if they remember it at all). And they certainly weren’t around to see the Soviet Union fall apart or really understand the results of socialism and communism. All they hear is “Free Stuff!” and they come running. They don’t count the cost of these failed economic systems. No – it’s not so much that they don’t count the cost. More like they can’t. Because they just don’t know.

(Not that I’m excusing them from their bad choices. You should be able to see that “free stuff” has to come from somewhere. And you have to be pretty selfish and self-absorbed to think that nobody is going to be negatively affected by your entitled demands).
Anyway, Professor Deming makes some very excellent points about this –
It’s disheartening that an avowed socialist is a viable candidate for president of the United States. Socialism is a dead end. For hundreds of years, it has failed everywhere it’s been adopted. The enthusiasm of our youth for the candidacy of Bernie Sanders is a symptom of our failure to educate them, not only in history, government and economics, but also basic morality.

You don’t have to be a student of ancient history to know socialism doesn’t work. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 was an unequivocal demonstration of the moral and economic superiority of capitalism. The misery caused by socialism is unfolding today in Venezuela. Since Venezuela embraced socialism in 1999, poverty, crime and corruption have all increased. Grocery shelves are empty and the annual inflation rate is estimated to be as high as 200 percent.

The United States is a constitutional republic founded on political equality, not equality of income or circumstances. Our system of government was designed to secure the natural rights of its citizens. These rights include not only “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” but the right to acquire and maintain private property. The Founding Fathers considered property rights to be sacred and paramount.

There are no property rights under socialism. Goods and services are distributed by force through political means. Everything you possess is subject to confiscation and redistribution. Industrious and productive people are punished; parasites are rewarded. When people come to believe they have a right to goods and services produced by other people, society disintegrates into squabbling factions. If socialism is allowed to progress to its logical extreme, it culminates in a military dictatorship like North Korea.

If you’re a conservative, you know these concepts inside and out. If you’re a Millennial, you’re all “What’s the Soviet Union? Who cares? WHERE’S MY FREE COLLEGE??”

Well, you get what you pay for, I suppose.

Deming also made this connection between socialism and crony capitalism, which I had never thought of before –
What about so-called “crony capitalism”? This is nothing more than socialism that benefits the wealthy and influential. It’s just as wrong as any other form of socialism. The cure is to limit government power. Human nature is corruptible. If government has the power to redistribute wealth, it will always act in the interests of the powerful segments of society.

Calling “crony capitalism” another form of socialism is actually quite brilliant. A lot of the arguments made in favor of socialism treat capitalism and crony capitalism the same way. Beyond the names, there is nothing capitalist about crony capitalism. It’s just lobbyists going to politicians and bartering preferential treatment and freebies in exchange for working to keep those politicians in office. I wish I had thought of that parallel – but I’m glad someone else did.
