In an exclusive interview with FT on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin touted the growth of national populism in Europe and America while saying that liberalism is "spent" as an ideology. He spoke on numerous issues at length, which we have broken down here by topic.
Liberal Governments

On the eve of the G20 summit, Putin said that the "liberal idea" had "outlived its purpose" as the public has turned against immigration and multiculturalism. His push back on liberalism aligns Putin with leaders like US president Donald Trump, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, Matteo Salvini in Italy, and the Brexit insurgency in the UK.
Putin said:

“[Liberals] cannot simply dictate anything to anyone just like they have been attempting to do over the recent decades.”

Immigration and Refugees

He said that Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to admit over 1 million refugees to Germany was a "cardinal mistake" and praised President Trump for trying to stop migrants and drugs from Mexico.
Putin said:

“This liberal idea presupposes that nothing needs to be done. That migrants can kill, plunder and rape with impunity because their rights as migrants have to be protected. Every crime must have its punishment. The liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population.”

On Election Interference

While Putin has been targeted in the U.S., namely for attempting to intervene in the country's elections, Putin denied it and called the idea “mythical interference”.
Putin said:

“What happened in the US, and how did it happen? In the US, the leading US companies — the companies, their managers, shareholders and partners — made use of these benefits. The middle class hardly benefited from globalization. The Trump team sensed this very keenly and clearly, and they used this in the election campaign. It is where you should look for reasons behind Trump’s victory, rather than in any alleged foreign interference.”

The China/U.S. Trade War

With regard to the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, Putin called the situation "explosive", blaming the issue on American unilateralism.

“Our relations with China are not motivated by timeserving political or any other considerations. China is showing loyalty and flexibility to both its partners and opponents. Maybe this is related to the historical features of Chinese philosophy, their approach to building relations,” Putin said.

A New Nuclear Arms Race

He also expressed concern about a new nuclear arms race.

“The cold war was a bad thing . . . but there were at least some rules that all participants in international communication more or less adhered to or tried to follow. Now, it seems that there are no rules at all,” Putin said.

Syria and Venezuela

On the precarious situations in Syria and Venezuela, Putin said:

“I believe that the Syrian people should be free to choose their own future. At the same time, I would like the actions of external players to be substantiated and, just as in the case of the risks you have mentioned, predictable and understandable, so that we can consider at least our next moves.”

He continued: “I believe that many things could have been done differently there when it comes to the economy. But we do not meddle in things; it is none of our business. We are prepared for any developments in any country, including Venezuela, if they are taking place in accordance with internal rules and the country’s legislation, its constitution, and in line with the people’s will.”
Relations With UK

Putin also alluded that relations with the UK were on the mends. Relations had been stalled since the attempted assassination of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal in England. The UK blames the Russian government for the nerve agent attack, but Putin has refuted it. Putin said:

“I think Russia and UK are both interested in fully restoring our relations, at least I hope a few preliminary steps will be made.”

North Korea

Regarding North Korea, Putin said:

“What we should be talking about is not how to make North Korea disarm, but how to ensure the unconditional security of North Korea. We must show it respect, and we must find a way of ensuring its security that will satisfy North Korea. If we do this, the situation may take a turn nobody can imagine today.”

The Russian Economy

Speaking about his own country, Putin said:

“Real wages are not in decline in Russia. On the contrary, they are starting to pick up. The macroeconomic situation in the country is stable. As for the central bank, yes, it is engaged in a gradual improvement of our financial system: inefficient and small-capacity companies, as well as semi-criminal financial organizations are leaving the market, and this is large-scale and complicated work.”

Spies and Treason

He also made it clear he had zero tolerance for spies against his country.

“Treason is the gravest crime possible and traitors must be punished. I am not saying that the Salisbury incident is the way to do it . . . but traitors must be punished,” he said.

Sexual Diversity

Finally, Putin claims that liberal government have pursued a "mindless multiculturalism" that embraces sexual diversity.
He concluded:

“I am not trying to insult anyone because we have been condemned for our alleged homophobia. But we have no problem with LGBT persons. God forbid, let them live as they wish. But some things do appear excessive to us. They claim now that children can play five or six gender roles. Let everyone be happy, we have no problem with that. But this must not be allowed to overshadow the culture, traditions and traditional family values of millions of people making up the core population.”

OSAKA, Japan (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin fired a new broadside against Western liberalism at the Group of 20 summit in Japan, saying that policies such as welcoming migrants have hurt people's interests.

Speaking after the summit in Osaka concluded on Saturday, Putin charged that Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and a drop of popularity of traditional parties in Europe have been rooted in growing public dismay with mainstream liberal policies.
He said Trump's election victory was driven by growing disenchantment with liberal policies.
"The liberal idea has started eating itself," Putin said at a news conference. "Millions of people live their lives, and those who propagate those ideas are separate from them."
He also charged that the influx of migrants to Europe has infringed on people's rights. "People live in their own country, according to their own traditions, why should it happen to them?" Putin said.
The Russian leader added that while "liberal ideas remain attractive as a whole," election results show that people want change.
Putin hailed his meeting with Trump on Friday on the sidelines of the G-20 summit as "business-like and pragmatic."
"We addressed almost the entire list of issues of mutual concern," he said. "Of course, we talked about the situation in various parts of the world. Overall, these consultations were useful."
He said the claims of Russian meddling in the U.S. election were part of the agenda of his talk with Trump.
At the start of Friday's meeting, the Russian leader laughed when a reporter shouted about Trump warning Putin "not to meddle" in the 2020 presidential election.
Asked Saturday whether the issue was discussed during the meeting, Putin said that "we talked about it," but didn't elaborate.
He said he believes it's necessary to "turn the page" in relations with the U.S., which have plunged to the lowest level since the Cold War era.
In November, Trump abruptly canceled a scheduled round of talks with Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Argentina over Russia's seizure of Ukrainian navy ships and their crews. Russia has kept the seamen in custody pending trial.
Putin said that Trump raised the issue during Friday's meeting and made it a priority.
The Russian leader said the naval incident was a provocation staged by the former Ukrainian president, and signaled that the Ukrainian seamen could be released after their trial is over.
"We should wait until it's over and then could deal with it," he said. "They were only fulfilling an order, but they violated the Russian law."
Putin said he and Trump agreed that the nations' top diplomats should continue discussions on a possible extension of the New Start nuclear arms reduction treaty that expires in 2021.
They also talked about the need to encourage the development of bilateral economic ties, Putin said.
He also responded to criticism from singer Elton John, who accused Putin of duplicity after he offered a critical view of the Western emphasis on LGBT rights.
"I deeply respect him, he is a musical genius and we all love his performance, but I believe he's mistaken," Putin said.
John and the filmmakers of his biopic "Rocketman" have sharply criticized a Russian distributor's decision to censor scenes from the new movie featuring gay sex and drug use.
Putin argued that Russia's ban on "propaganda" of LGBT culture among children is aimed at protecting them from aggressive proselytizing by the LGBT community.
"Let a person grow up first before making a choice," Putin said. "Let the children in peace."
He said that "our attitude to the LGBT community is absolutely calm and unbiased," but added that "this part of community aggressively enforces its point of view on others."
International human rights groups have said that Russia's "gay propaganda" law has exacerbated hostility toward LGBT people in the country and stifled access to LGBT-inclusive education and support services.
They also strongly protested a 2017 crackdown on gays in the mostly Muslim republic of Chechnya, where more than 100 gay men were arrested and subjected to torture, with some of them killed, according to activists.
Earlier this year, rights activists in Russia reported a new crackdown on gays in Chechnya in which at least two people have died and about 40 people have been detained. Authorities in Chechnya have denied the claims.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin said in Japan following the G20 Summit Saturday that the “liberal idea has started eating itself,” slamming the globalist Left for their policies on migrants and the LGBT agenda.

“The liberal idea has started eating itself. Millions of people live their lives, and those who propagate those ideas are separate from them,” Putin stated.

“People live in their own countries according to their own traditions, why should it happen to them?” Putin said of the victims of globalist migration, as Muslim refugees make their way into countries in Europe and the United States. Putin has fought against the spread of globalist migration in Russia.

“Let a person grow up first before making a choice. Let the children in peace,” Putin said, referring to the LGBT community, noting that “our attitude to the LGBT community is absolutely calm and unbiased.”

Putin said that “this part of community aggressively enforces its point of view on others.”

President Donald Trump asserted himself as a strong nationalist leader at the G20, particularly in his dealings with China.

President Donald Trump has optimistically returned to negotiations with China, stressing that he is not going to raise tariffs against the Chinese while talks are in progress. Trump is fighting to reverse the decades-old trade imbalance between the two superpowers, because China has been grossly taking advantage of the United States for a very long time.

President Donald Trump’s envoy finished talks in Beijing with Chinese leaders as the United States and China come closer to reaching a massive trade agreement that would re-shape the economies of both nations.

Now, the series swings back home to the United States for the final round of negotiations.

Steven Mnuchin and Robert Lighthizer flew to Beijing and did not experience any difficulty — at least in public — but President Donald Trump still holds all the cards.

For decades, China has taken advantage of the United States in trade deals, exploiting the weakness of past Republican and Democrat administrations. But Trump changed the game.

American tariffs struck a decisive blow to the Chinese economy, forcing the business-savvy Communists to come to the table. In 2018, China posted its worst economic growth figure — 6.6 percent — since 1990, when then-president George Bush used the collapse of the Soviet Union to push through a globalist America Last foreign policy imitated by his successors Clinton, Bush, and Obama. China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001 spelled doom for American manufacturing. The Midwest, battered also by NAFTA and the more than $1 trillion taxpayer tab for the Iraq War, fell into deep economic decline.

But Trump is bringing it back, aided by Mnuchin and his economic adviser Larry Kudlow, who is more than willing to play ball with tariffs in order to correct the massive trade disparity enjoyed by the Chinese regime.

The two sides have already agreed on one major point: China is going to purchase about $1.2 trillion in additional American goods over a six-year period, enough to wipe out the trade imbalance by the year 2024.

But the devil is in the details. The American people deserve 5G technology without fear of Chinese companies spying on us, even more than they do now. And the Chinese shamelessly rip off our tech innovation with intellectual property theft. Inventors — like content creators — don’t like being ripped off.

Trump has the upper hand because he can always call the deal off and impose more tariffs on China. Who can stop him? Not the well-funded but misguided Koch political network, which fought tooth and nail against tariffs (they like so-called “free trade” because they like cheap overseas labor). The Kochs were completely incapable of stopping Trump’s tariffs, which must really make them mad. Some people just don’t want to see America do well. Sad!

Now the Chinese vice premier is gearing up for a trip to Washington, D.C. Has he read “Art of the Deal”? Perhaps the North Koreans can lend him their copy, gifted to them by America’s informal ambassador Dennis Rodman.

Good work, Lighthizer and Mnuchin!

Such was the confident claim of Vladimir Putin to the Financial Times on the eve of a G-20 gathering that appeared to validate his thesis.



Consider who commanded all the attention at the Osaka summit.
The main event was Trump’s meeting with China’s Xi Jinping and their agreement to renew trade talks. Xi runs an archipelago of detention camps where China’s Uighur Muslims and its Kazakh minority have their minds coercively “corrected.”
A major media focus at the summit was Trump’s meeting with Putin where he playfully admonished the Russian president not to meddle again in our 2020 election. The two joked about how both are afflicted with a media that generates constant fake news.
At the G-20 class picture, Trump was seen smiling and shaking hands with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom U.S. intelligence says ordered the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump called the prince “a friend” who has done a “spectacular job.”
Trump then left for Seoul, traveled to the DMZ, and crossed into North Korea to shake hands with Kim Jong Un, who runs a police state unrivaled for its repression.
Negotiations on Kim’s nuclear weapons may be back on track.
Among other G-20 leaders present were Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi of India and President Recep Erdogan of Turkey, who has imprisoned tens of thousands following a coup attempt in July 2016.
In his interview with the FT’s Lionel Barber, Putin appeared as much an analyst of, as an advocate for, the nationalism and populism that seems to be succeeding the 20th-century liberalism of the West.
Why is liberalism failing? Several causes, said Putin. Among them, its failure to deal with the crisis of the age: mass and unchecked illegal migration. Putin praised Trump’s efforts to secure the U.S. border:

“This liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population...
This liberal idea presupposes that... migrants can kill, plunder and rape with impunity because their rights as migrants have to be protected.”

Putin deplored Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 2015 decision to bring into Germany a million refugees from Syria’s civil war.
His comments came as 10 Democratic candidates in the second presidential primary debate were raising their hands in support of the proposition that breaking into the USA should cease to be a crime and those who succeed in breaking in should be given free health care.
Putin also sees the social excesses of multiculturalism and secularism in the West as representing a failure of liberalism.
In a week where huge crowds celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall “uprising” in Greenwich Village, as it is now called, with parties and parades, Putin declared:

“Have we forgotten that all of us live in a world based on biblical values? … I am not trying to insult anyone because we have been condemned for our alleged homophobia. But we have no problem with LGBT persons. God forbid, let them live as they wish.”
He added, “But some things do appear excessive to us. They claim now that children can play five or six gender roles.”

Elton John pronounced himself “deeply upset.”
Putin did not back off:

“Let everyone be happy … But this must not be allowed to overshadow the culture, traditions and traditional family values of millions of people making up the core population.”

Putin took power, two decades ago, as this 21st century began. In recent years, he has advanced himself not only as a foe of liberalism but a champion of populism, traditionalism and nationalism.
Nor is he hesitant to declare his views regarding U.S. politics.
Of Trump, Putin says, “He is a talented person (who) knows very well what his voters expect of him. … Trump looked into his opponent’s attitude toward him and saw changes in American society.”
Recalling his own controversial comment that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century, Putin said the tragedy was not the death of Communism but the shattering of the Russian Federation into 15 separate nations.
The tragedy was the “dispersal of ethnic Russians” across the newly independent successor states of the Soviet Union: “25 million ethnic Russians found themselves living outside the Russian Federation. … Is this not a tragedy? A huge one! And family relations? Jobs? Travel? It was nothing but a disaster.”
What may be said of Putin?
He is no Stalin, no Communist ideologue, but rather a Russian nationalist who seeks the return of her lost peoples to the Motherland, and, seeing his country as a great power, wants NATO out of his front yard.
While we have issues with him on arms control, Iran and Venezuela, we have a common interest in avoiding a war with this nuclear-armed nation as we did with the far more menacing Soviet Empire of the Cold War.
