Quinnipiac: Obama Worst President Since World War II, Reagan the Best

President Barack Obama is the worst president since World War II, and the United States would have been better off if his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, had won the election in 2012, a new Quinnipiac University national poll released today reveals.

The best president? Ronald Reagan.

"Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"Would Mitt have been a better fit? More voters in hindsight say yes," Malloy said.

Out of 1,446 registered voters surveyed nationwide from June 24-30, 33 percent deemed Obama as the worse president, while another 28 percent picked former President George W. Bush as the worst, Quinnipiac reported Wednesday.

In addition, 45 percent of the voters said the country would be better off if Romney won in 2012, and 38 percent said the country would be worse off.

The choice was sharply divided among party lines, with Republicans choosing Romney by 84 percent to 5 percent and Democrats choosing Obama by 74 percent to 10 percent. Independent voters came in with a 47 percent to 33 percent nod to Romney.

Overall, Reagan topped voters' pick for the best president since World War II, with 35 percent of the voters choosing him. Trailing Reagan were former presidents Bill Clinton at 18 percent, 15 percent for John F. Kennedy and just 8 percent for Obama. Among Democrats, 34 percent picked Clinton as the best president, followed by 18 percent each for Obama and Kennedy.

Meanwhile, among the Republicans polled, an overwhelming 66 percent chose Reagan as the best president. He was followed distantly by former President George H.W. Bush and Kennedy, with 6 percent each, and Obama and Dwight D. Eisenhower, who tied at 4 percent each.

George W. Bush and Obama, compared side-by-side, came out very closely matched among the voters polled. Thirty-nine percent said Obama has been a better president than Bush, while 40 percent said he was worse.

Obama has been a better president than the junior Bush, 39 percent of voters say, while 40 percent say he is worse. Obama fared better with women voters, with 42 percent-38 percent saying he has been a better president than Bush. With men, 43 percent said Obama is worse worse than Bush, while 36 said he is better.

The Bush/Obama comparison fell mainly along party lines. Republicans said Obama is worse than Bush by 79 percent to 7 percent, while independent voters said Obama is worse by 41 percent to 31 percent.

Meanwhile, the Democrats polled said Obama is better than Bush was by 78 percent to 4 percent.

The voters did say, by 37 percent to 34 percent, that Obama is better for the economy than Bush.

American voters say 54 - 44 percent that the Obama Administration is not competent running the government. The president is paying attention to what his administration is doing, 47 percent say, while 48 percent say he does not pay enough attention.

The poll showed Obama's job approval rating is stalled at a negative 40 percent to 53 percent.

His rating hit an all time low in December 2013 of 38-57 percent, Quinnipiac reports, and an April 2 national survey put the presidents rating at a negative 42-50 percent.

Obama netted negative scores of 10 percent to 88 percent from Republicans, 31-59 percent from independents, 37-57 percent from men and 42-49 percent from women. But Democrats approve of him by 79-13 percent, the poll said.

Obama got mixed grade for his character, with voters split 48-48 percent on his being honest and trustworthy and 51-47 percent that he cares about their needs. But as far as his leadership qualities, Obama got a negative 47-51 percent. The president gets mixed grades for character as voters say 48 - 48 percent that he is honest and trustworthy and 51 - 47 percent that he cares about their needs and problems. He gets a negative 47 - 51 percent for leadership qualities.

The president also got negative grades for how he handles most key issues, including 40-55 percent for handling the economy; 37-57 percent for foreign policy; 40-58 percent for healthcare; and 44-51 percent for terrorism. He netted a positive rating of 50-4 percent for how he handles the environment.

With all the usual caveats about reading too much into a single poll, let’s read too much into this new poll from Qunnipiac University:

President Barack Obama is the worst president since World War II, 33 percent of American voters say in a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Another 28 percent pick President George W. Bush.

Ronald Reagan is the best president since WWII, 35 percent of voters say, with 18 percent for Bill Clinton, 15 percent for John F. Kennedy and 8 percent for Obama, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Among Democrats, 34 percent say Clinton is the best president, with 18 percent each for Obama and Kennedy.

Obama has been a better president than George W. Bush, 39 percent of voters say, while 40 percent say he is worse. Men say 43 – 36 percent that Obama is worse than Bush while women say 42 – 38 percent he is better. Obama is worse, Republicans say 79 – 7 percent and independent voters say 41 – 31 percent. Polls are often a quick way to manufacture news, and they’re used as much to manipulate public opinion as measure it, but this particular survey isn’t the sort of thing media organizations are going to relish putting in headlines and inviting liberal guests to discuss. I’ve always been a bit suspicious of these “best and worst presidents in history” rankings, because they’re more of a lens for magnifying partisan passions than a dispassionate critique of performance. That would explain how President Obama ends up as both the absolute worst, and the fourth-best, postwar president in the same poll.

There’s also going to be a heavy bias toward recent memory – would the respondents for this poll care to sit for follow-up questions in which they discuss the best and worst policy decisions of the Eisenhower Administration? – and toward media mythology, which is why a large number of people who could not accurately describe a single thing President John F. Kennedy did will assure you he was the best President ever, the luminous ideal for every chief executive to come after stovepipe hats went out of fashion.

So what this is all really saying is that Obama’s disapproval rating among everyone who isn’t a passionate Democrat partisan is hitting rock bottom, and the passionate partisans aren’t feeling very energetic about defending him at the moment. This isn’t the first poll to show strong buyer’s remorse for Mitt Romney, who is probably benefiting from the impression that he’s competent, while even Obama supporters are having a hard time making that claim for their man with a straight face:

Of course, as we should all remember from the 2012 exit polls, that election had almost nothing to do with competence. It was all about empathy, the perception that Obama understood and cared for the Sainted Middle Class more than Baron Harkonnen did. How’s that working out for everyone?

Another interesting thing about this poll, and other recent surveys with similar results, is how a fairly modest shift in crucial demographics can produce tectonic poll movement for those who depend upon identity politics:

Today, the president gets negative scores of 10 – 88 percent from Republicans, 31 – 59 percent from independent voters, 37 – 57 percent from men and 42 – 49 percent from women. Democrats approve 79 – 13 percent.

The president gets mixed grades for character as voters say 48 – 48 percent that he is honest and trustworthy and 51 – 47 percent that he cares about their needs and problems. He gets a negative 47 – 51 percent for leadership qualities.

The economy and jobs are the most important problems facing the country today, 35 percent of voters say, with 12 percent listing politicians/campaigns/corruption, 6 percent each for healthcare and foreign affairs, 5 percent for the budget and 4 percent each for education and immigration.

Indies and men didn’t support him all that much in 2012, either. Women disapproving 42-49 is the crushing blow. Also, notice how the Number One issue for the Ruling Class, immigration reform, chugs in with a measly 4 percent among actual Americans. Politicians and corruption climbing into second place isn’t happy news for the people who think the State should run everything, especially if Republicans can do a good job of hammering the essential point that Big Government and Honest Government are fundamentally incompatible concepts.

That’s a bit “if,” but as a snapshot of the evolving national discussion, a major poll showing people writing off Obama as the worst President in seven decades is interesting. His numbers will perk up after he’s gone, just as President Bush’s dismal numbers are shifting; time heals political wounds. As I’m sure Mr. Bush would attest, that’s not much comfort in the days after a grim midterm election defeat. I don’t suppose a spirited debate over whether Obama is more unpopular than Bush, or vice versa, is something either man’s supporters would relish… but it’s bound to be a more unpleasant discussion for those who line up behind the man that’s still in office.

When asked a question often discussed with dread at family Thanksgiving dinners, a plurality of voters — 33 percent — believe President Obama (or "Nobummer," amirite?) is the worst president since World War II. In second place on the same question was George W. Bush with 28 percent. These are the numbers you will read in several headlines today. The thing is, the "worst president since World War Two" results aren't really the worst numbers for the president in the Quinnipiac poll from which they're drawn.

Let's address the headlines first. In the Quinnipiac poll, Obama finds himself among a handful of post-war presidents who garner polarizing reactions from voters. Those presidents, roughly, are Kennedy, Reagan, and the three most recent: Obama, Clinton, and George W. Bush. When asked to choose the best post-war president, for instance, Ronald Reagan snagged 35 percent of voters. But 18 percent thought it was Kennedy. Clinton took 18 percent of voters, and 8 percent think it's Obama, putting him in fourth place. (George W. Bush, for what it's worth, had just 1 percent of voters on this question).

If you look at the political breakdown by party of who is saying Obama is the worst, it falls strongly along party lines, with a little bit of help from independents: 63 percent of Republicans chose Obama, while 54 percent of Democrats said George W. Bush. Independents voted "for" both: 23 percent said George W. Bush was the worst, while 36 percent chose Obama. On a similar question directly comparing Bush and Obama, the expected partisan divide is even stronger:

Men say 43 - 36 percent that Obama is worse than Bush while women say 42 - 38 percent he is better. Obama is worse, Republicans say 79 - 7 percent and independent voters say 41 - 31 percent. So the core group of voters strongly opposed to everything Obama does think he's a bad president, and the people who voted for him have a more positive opinion of the job he's doing. That's not a surprise.

Which brings us to the number that's arguably the actual worst thing in the poll for Obama: "American voters say 54 - 44 percent that the Obama Administration is not competent running the government." Politico's Mike Allen agreed, flagging that number as of most concern to the White House this morning. This is the second recent poll to give the president or his administration a bad rating on a "competency" question: an earlier NBC/WSJ poll found that just half of Americans believe Obama is a competent leader of the federal government.

Although the poll marked a slight uptick in his overall approval rating to 40 percent, the president didn't fare too well when respondents were asked to rate his performance on a bunch of crucial issues:

Voters were 40 - 55 percent against his handling of the economy;
They also were negative on his foreign policy, 37 - 57 percent. And on the related issue of terrorism? 44 - 51 percent.
Same goes for healthcare: 40 - 58 percent against.
He did better on the environment, with 50 percent of voters approving and 40 percent against.

Then again, basically no one else in government right now is doing so well in the polls, either.

Two polls just released show a gathering storm for President Obama.

These two new surveys indicate that not only do voters think former Governor Mitt Romney — the 2012 Republican presidential nominee — would have been a better president than Barack Obama, but a big majority also thinks Obama is the worst president in seventy years.

For all of you Watergate-obsessed leftists, that time frame includes Richard Nixon. And for all of you still afflicted with Bush Derangement Syndrome, it also includes George W. Bush. The horror! The horror!

Nearly universally, polling shows Mr. Obama’s job approval rating falling, and more and more voters are expressing buyers’ remorse about him.

Troops being sent into Iraq by the anti-Iraq war president as the region convulses with a massive new jihadi offensive, a sharp contraction of the U.S. economy in the first quarter, joblessness and wages stagnant, a major crisis on the southern border, the IRS targeting scandal and subsequent cover-up, major defeats at the Supreme Court, Obamacare, his signature “achievement,” continuing to spiral into catastrophe….it all adds up to a president drowning in his own corruption and failures.

Voters don’t like a drowning president. They like one fully attentive and in control of domestic and global events. This president clearly is not.

That’s driving a plurality of voters into the arms of Mr. Romney, a year and a half too late.

According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, 45 percent say the country would have been better off if Mr. Romney had been elected, while just 38 percent say Mr. Obama is still the way to go. Even Democrats are heading for the tall grass: just 74 percent of them told the pollsters Mr. Obama was the better choice in the last election.

Quinnipiac also found that voters believe Mr. Obama is the worst president since World War II, topping both his predecessor and the president perennially ranked the “worst,” Richard Nixon, both of whom left office under shadows of staggering unpopularity.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll. It took Mr. Bush eight years to reach that point. For Mr. Obama, just a little over six.

At the same time, a Zogby Analytics Poll just released also found Mr. Obama sliding to 44 percent job approval, while his disapproval jumped 4 points from last month to 54 percent. Gallup places him at 40 percent approval, 54 percent disapproval.

Even more disturbingly, nearly half of voters told the Zogby poll that Mr. Obama is “unable to lead the country.”

He has lost the confidence of many of the American people. If this were a parliamentary system, there would be a no-confidence vote and a call for new elections.

But we’ve got a republic — or used to, anyway.

Can the president bounce back from these atrocious poll numbers and paralytic impotence?

Americans Finger Obama As Worst President In 70 Years

According to a new poll from Quinnipiac University, more Americans identify President Barack Obama as the worst occupant of the Oval Office since World War II than any other postwar President, including President Richard Nixon.
The poll, released Thursday, found 33 percent of U.S. voters identifying Obama as the worst President, followed by President George W. Bush (28 percent) and Nixon (13 percent). Every other President garnered “worst” votes in the single-digit percentages, led by President Jimmy Carter at 8 percent.
Of course, living memory and present-day partisanship play a role in producing these kinds of numbers: while Obama’s “worst President” numbers were truly brutal, he also managed to garner a surprising number of “best President” votes in a poll that ultimately found him first among the worst. Obama came in fourth in polling of best postwar Presidents — a list topped by President Ronald Reagan (35 percent), President Bill Clinton (18 percent) and President John F. Kennedy (15 percent).
Obama received “best” votes from 8 percent of poll participants. Among Democrats, he came in a distant second to Clinton as their choice of “best” President, collecting 18 percent compared with Clinton’s 34 percent.
Voters remain evenly divided on the matter of whether Obama is a worse President than his immediate predecessor. The question “Do you think Barack Obama has been a better President than George W. Bush, worse, or about the same as President Bush?” elicited a nearly even split, with 40 percent answering that Obama is worse, 39 percent maintaining that Bush was worse and another 20 percent indicating the two leaders’ legacies have been about the same.
Even though Obama won a second term in office, the poll finds that voters may be pining for the alternate version of history that might have unfolded had the Republican candidate he defeated, Mitt Romney, been elected President instead.
“America would be better off if Republican Mitt Romney had won the 2012 presidential election, 45 percent of voters say, while 38 percent say the country would be worse off,” the poll summary observes.
Most of the nostalgia for Romney falls along predictable party lines, with 84 percent of Republicans indicating the Nation would have been better off had he been elected President. Only 10 percent of Democrats, on the other hand, agreed. Interestingly, Independent voters favored a do-over with Romney as President by a 47 percent to 33 percent margin.
